TURN IT OFF!!?? Teaching staff at Bangor University have had their latest research on navigation in published in Science magazine! More here https://www.bangor.ac.uk/news/2026-05-29-research-sheds-light-on-disruptive-impact-of-electromagnetic-noise-pollution-on-bat or read the paper here; https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adq4418
"Radiofrequency, or electromagnetic, noise naturally occurs in the atmosphere, but it has increased substantially due to human activities, being produced by electronics, power lines, and even LED lights. The impacts of such noise on wildlife and humans is often debated and is yet to be understood. Lindecke et al. looked at the impacts of relatively weak broadband radiofrequency fields on migratory soprano pipistrelle bats and found that it disrupted their orientation even hours after exposure. The results suggest that the ever-present din of our devices may be having a bigger effect than was previously thought." Dr William Schneider and Prof Richard Holland are part of our teaching staff and also the Bangor navigation research team. Still time to join us! The study, published in the journal, Science, and led by researchers at Bangor University, the University of Latvia and the University of Oldenburg, in Germany, has revealed unexpected effects of exposure to electromagnetic noise that is an ever-present feature of urban environments.

Saving the UK rainforests! Prof John Healey and PhD student Sophie Higgett talk about UK temerate rainforests, their importance and conservation projects to restore and protect them. John who is Professor of Forest Sciences at Bangor University commented:
"There has been a huge increase in interest in the conservation and restoration of temperate rainforests in the UK. We really hope that this film, capturing some of our current research to tackle the current challenges to conserve them, will further encourage students to join our degrees in Bangor that focus on these issues. In particular, our BSc in Woodland Management and Conservation (https://www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/d515-woodland-management-and-conservation-bsc-hons) and our MSc in Environmental Forestry feature modules on forest ecology, woodland conservation and ecological restoration. Our students carry out hands-on fieldwork in the temperate rainforests in North Wales that feature in this film and many of them go on to become researchers in forest ecology and conservation"
"We are very optimistic that our set of current research projects, including those shown in this film, will make a valuable contribution to improve success in the conservation and restoration of these habitats which are globally important for their biodiversity.
"It was a pleasure to work with the team from CGTNEurope in making this film and I was fascinated to learn so much about the technical skill and art of filming. Woodland Trust Cymru The Woodland Trust Royal Forestry Society - RFS Forestry England https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-5aIj1PwYE
