“A manoeuvre like that would have caused some screaming on a commercial flight.”

Flying a plane badly, on purpose. That's the premise of the latest episode of YouTuber Tom Scott's ENGLAND series, and this time, Tom joined us at Cranfield to experience something you definitely won't find on your average passenger flight.

He took to the skies in our National Flying Laboratory Centre (NFLC), our unique flying classroom and laboratory built to give students hands-on experience of flight testing, alongside our NFLC team, including Robert Harrison and Simon Place.

Our Saab 340B is fully instrumented to provide real-time aircraft data, allowing students to experience the role of a flight test engineer while in the air. More than 2,000 aeronautical students from over 20 universities fly with the NFLC each year.

During the flight, Tom experienced some of the manoeuvres our students undertake as part of their learning, while seeing how the forces and aircraft behaviour are recorded and analysed.

So what does it actually feel like to put flight theory into practice?

"Welcome to Flight Club! This is what makes Cranfield such a special place to work and study. Having the skills and facilities to build an aeroplane, carry out research projects around it, and then flight test it from our own airport is something that makes us truly unique."

Professor Guy Gratton’s Flight Club is officially underway. Members of the team have unboxed the Flylight Skyranger Nynja 912ULS kit and completed the first inspection, as part of the British Microlight Aircraft Association's (BMAA) New Horizons initiative.

The project will give students and staff the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in aircraft design, development and maintenance, complementing their academic studies and giving them the chance to take their learning from the classroom into the real world.

Joining us this autumn? Flight Club could be a standout project to get involved in, helping you develop practical skills and experience that can strengthen your employability.

Could you be part of the team?

After 20 years at Cranfield as Chief Test Pilot and Head of our National Flying Laboratory Centre (NFLC), Roger “Dodge” Bailey retired, but wasn’t quite ready to stop learning.

His work at Cranfield alongside his experience flying the Shuttleworth collection inspired him to “keep his mind active” by undertaking a MSc by Research degree, delving into the connections between old and modern aircraft which could help modern-day pilots fly older aeroplanes.

Having spent years helping educate and inspire future aerospace professionals, Roger finally had the chance to experience graduation for himself, describing it as “an honour and very special.”

On behalf of all of Cranfield staff, students and alumni, on whom Dodge had such a profound impact, we offer our heartfelt congratulations on his degree 🎓👏

A university where you get to build an aircraft? . 'Flight Club', led by Professor Guy Gratton will see staff and students come together to build and fly a Flylight Skyranger Nynja 912ULS, as part of the British Microlight Aircraft Association's (BMAA) New Horizons initiative.

Over an exciting 18-month journey the team will build a 600kg aircraft. Students will get hands-on engineering experience that supports their research, as well as flight opportunities. This is not a model aircraft - it's being built to fly!

The first inspection is complete. There are five more pending. Guy, an external BMAA Inspector and members of the club committee are working hard to get the project underway.

The unboxing is done and now, the next chapter begins. We can't wait to see this aircraft take shape!

What does studying aerospace at an industry-connected university look like?

For Ying Tian, Aerospace Vehicle Design MSc has meant developing specialist knowledge while working on challenges connected to the future of flight.

“The opportunity to work on industry-supported projects has also been amazing. For example, the project we are working on is supported by Airbus, one of the biggest names in aerospace.”

By learning from experts, engaging with industry-led challenges and applying advanced engineering concepts to real problems, Cranfield helps students build the specialist expertise and practical experience to contribute from day one. Employers benefit from graduates who understand the realities of industry and are ready to apply their knowledge and practical skills to complex challenges.
