Last week, Queen’s celebrated Universities Refugee Week with a fantastic series of events highlighting learning, community, and creativity.

On Tuesday 3 March, Dr Suzanne Mooney delivered a powerful and thought provoking webinar on Trauma-Informed Practice, offering valuable insights for all those working to support people seeking sanctuary.

On Wednesday, we welcomed representatives from across Northern Ireland’s entire FE and HE sectors for our Sanctuary Pathways through Further and Higher Education event - all coming together under one roof to help participants, particularly refugees and asylum seekers, to overcome barriers and explore routes into tertiary education.

To mark International Women’s Day, Sunday, 8 March, we were delighted to host an uplifting intercultural event organised by Beyond Skin, featuring songs, artworks, drumming, a beautiful short ballet piece, and mesmerising Sufi Dancing led by Fahima Mirzaei.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to a memorable week of learning, connection, and celebration.

Queen's is not only a University of Sanctuary, but also the first organisation in the UK to gain Platinum status in Cycling UK’s Cycle Friendly Employer accreditation! We recently celebrated both achievements with a Sanctuary Cycle ride, and thanks to the generosity of our Sustainability team and our partners in Freedom Cycles, one of our cyclists was able to keep the bike he had used on the day!

Many thanks to the Sustainable Travel and Transport team at Queen’s, and to Freedom Cycles, for making our small pilot 'Sanctuary Cycle' possible yesterday! It was a joint celebration for two significant milestones: in 2025, Queen’s University attained formal status as a “University of Sanctuary”; and we were also the first organisation in the UK to achieve PLATINUM status in Cycling UK’s Cycle Friendly Employer accreditation!

Hopefully we'll be back for another Sanctuary Cycle ride in the Spring!

What a fantastic event our Global Greetings language lunch turned out to be!

We had experts in some 16 languages at tables throughout the room, so participants could spend 10 minutes in a ‘speed visit’ to a range of cultures and countries, learning to meet and greet their neighbours in a selection of languages from (deep breath): Arabic, Cantonese, French, German, Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Mandarin, Polish, Romanian, British Sign Language, Irish Sign Language, Spanish and Ulster Scots!

Keep an eye on our Sanctuary website for resources to download, coming soon:

Many thanks to all from the Civic Engagement team and the Language Centre at Queen’s for putting it together, and to all who came and joined the multi-lingual conversation!

Coming up next, our ‘Sanctuary Coffee Morning Special’: a visit to the City Hall on 8 October to find out about the services the Council offers. Find out more and register here:

Just two days until our Global Greetings event - bring your own lunch, take away a language! Or three or four! We'll have tables for a whole range of languages, including Arabic, Cantonese, Hindi, Italian, Polish, Romanian and many more.

Spend ten minutes learning 9 basic phrases to meet and greet your neighbours in one new language, then move on from table to table!

12.30-1.30pm, South Dining Hall.

Notice anything unusual about the Lanyon Building at Queen's last night? Yes, it was lit up in purple, for World Pancreatic Cancer Day (21 November)!

"Nearly 10,500 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK each year" says Pancreatic Cancer UK, and shockingly, "less than 7% of those diagnosed will survive beyond 5 years. The disease currently receives just 3% of UK cancer research funding, despite being the UK’s fifth biggest cancer killer".

Find out more about the campaign here:
