St. Malachy's College

St. Malachy's College Founded in 1833, St Malachy’s College is a Catholic Grammar School. This page is the official page for keeping up to date with the College.

Founded in 1833, St Malachy’s College is a Catholic Grammar School for boys. We take great pride in the history of the College which was opened on St Malachy’s Day 3rd November 1833. The College began with eight boarders and ten day pupils. Today the population has grown to over 1000 pupils. The pupils, with the coat of arms of the Diocese of Down and Connor on their school badge, remain loyal to t

he rich tradition of the College. The aims and ethos of the College are based on partnerships. These come in many forms and their success enables the school to be all that it is. We work very closely with our link primary schools to ensure that the transition from primary to St Malachy’s College is a natural and positive experience. We make sure we keep you informed of your son’s progress on a regular basis through our strong pastoral care system. A parent can always speak to someone who knows their child. St Malachy’s has a very strong Careers Education Department which works in close partnership with a wide range of local companies to provide careers advice and guidance to pupils throughout each stage of the pupil’s education.

Well done to our fantastic Year 8 students who have been awarded April MOTM, Francis, Ryan, Tomjo, Eoghan, Oisin and Aniketh have been recognised for their outstanding resilience.

Staff have praised their never-give-up attitudes, the way they tackle challenges head-on, and their determination to keep improving both inside and outside the classroom.

Bassoon showcase! 🎶
Pupils from our music department were delighted to take part in yet another Bassoon and Beyond Showcase. Pupils were given the opportunity to perform with other primary and post-primary Bassoon players.

The EA Music Bassoon and Beyond scheme has been a huge success particularly in St. Malachy’s with some pupils now studying for their Grade 8 in Bassoon in just four years of lessons.

This success was highlighted when our four most advanced pupils gave a performance to the audience and the younger performers.

A huge thanks to the EA music service and Bassoon tutor Krista Gallagher for all her work in getting the pupils to this stage in their musical journey.

Congratulations to the Year 8 Basketball team who retained the Vince Halloran Cup, and become the Northern Ireland Schools champions for 2026. In a very competitive competition, the College had wins over Lagan College, St Pat’s Academy Dungannon and St Pat’s Armagh. A win over Abbey CBS, Newry set up a final against St Ronan’s Lurgan which the boys won by 4 points.

Last weekend, our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze teams took part in their Practice Expedition, at Tollymore Forest Park. The boys were faced with challenging conditions and handled everything excellently. Also, their camp craft is improving all the time, with some great evening meal menus and super tent skills. As always, the boys were a credit to themselves and the College. They are due to complete their Qualifying Expedition in June.
