A fantastic year for our SEN & Additional Needs module!

In 2025/26, the module expanded across both semesters, giving students even more opportunities to develop inclusive practice through partnerships with Keep NI Beautiful and Angel Eyes.

From outdoor learning and VR experiences simulating visual impairment to exploring diversity, inclusion, bullying, and social disadvantage, students engaged with a wide range of real-world learning experiences.

A huge thank you to our partners, staff, and students for making this such a successful year ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Irish Language Commissioner Dr Pรณl Deeds visited Stranmillis University College on Thursday, accompanied by commission staff Terry Curran and Amber McDaid, to discuss recent and ongoing Irish-medium research undertaken by the Centre for Research in Educational Underachievement.

The meeting provided an opportunity to share key Stranmillis-led research projects, including 'A Fair Start', presented by Professor Noel Purdy; the recently published research report on Teacher Workload in the Irish-medium Sector, presented by Dr Emilia Symington; and two ongoing research projects focusing on assessment within the Irish-medium sector, presented by Dr Claire Mc Veigh; and the challenges facing Irish-medium vocational learners, presented by Dr Katie Tate.

Discussions also explored the Commissionerโ€™s current work and potential opportunities for future collaboration between the Commission and Stranmillis.

Year 1 students from the BA in Early Childhood Studies recently visited Reggio Emilia, Italy, to take part in a bespoke Reggio Emilia Approach Study Tour at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

Led by international expert and author Paola Strozzi, the three-day programme gave students the opportunity to explore the innovative Reggio Emilia philosophy - an approach that places the child at the centre of learning and recognises every child as an individual with unlimited potential.

Students also participated in workshops, toured the renowned Ateliers, and enjoyed visits to both Bologna and the city of Reggio Emilia.

Early Childhood Studies BA students studying the final-year module An Interprofessional Approach to Safeguarding Young Children recently visited Holy Trinity College, Cookstown, to learn about the schoolโ€™s trauma-informed approach to supporting pupils affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

Students heard from staff and external professionals about how the school promotes positive mental health, resilience, and engagement in learning through pastoral care, family support, and partnership working. Holy Trinity College is also one of only a few schools in Northern Ireland to employ a Schools Social Worker.

Students were welcomed by Principal Mr McNeill and attended presentations from Mrs Gilvary, Mrs Devlin, Mrs Campbell, and Mrs Oโ€™Loan. Also pictured is module coordinator Heather Lyle, Senior Lecturer at Stranmillis University College.

We were delighted to host the specialist Classroom Assistants course for 2026-2027 at College this week. This course offers opportunities for new and experienced Classroom Assistants to upskill in areas of SEN and teaching and learning support.

Over 100 new students joined the course on Saturday 9th May, many supported by Belfast City Council, their unions and sponsoring schools.
