Thank you to everyone who visited us at the Balmoral Show last week. We had two fantastic days engaging with members of the public and the rural community.

Staff who attended carried out blood pressure checks and CPR demonstrations, while the Schools Rural Health Committee showcased their work on rural health and demonstrated effective handwashing techniques, with a focus on raising awareness of zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans.

The Rural Health Committee was proud to attend the launch of, the NI Agri Rural Health Forum health initiative this year, which is focusing on sepsis awareness.

After a really impactful launch at Balmoral Show, we’re reminding farm families to stay alert to the signs of sepsis and to trust their instincts if they’re concerned about an infection.

💬 Early action can make all the difference.

Last Thursday 14th May, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, Mairead Ryan hosted “A Story From Every Corner” at Queen’s School of Nursing and Midwifery in partnership with the Wellbeing Ambassadors. The event was a Living Library experience bringing healthcare students and staff together with individuals sharing lived experiences of mental health, recovery, addiction, advocacy and trauma-informed practice.

Through small-group conversations, reflection spaces and meaningful discussion, students had the opportunity to listen to stories that challenged stigma, encouraged empathy and highlighted the importance of compassionate, person-centred care.

A huge thank you to all of our speakers and partner organisations who gave their time, honesty and experience to make this event possible. Your willingness to share your stories created a powerful learning experience for everyone involved.

Thank you also to every student and staff member who attended.

Cities@Heart: Putting Heart Health First Across Europe ❤️

Cardiovascular disease kills more Europeans than all cancers combined, yet much of it is preventable.

Many people live with silent risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes, unaware until serious problems occur.

In Northern Ireland, cardiovascular disease causes 24% of all deaths, with around 350 families losing a loved one every month. The impact is even greater in deprived communities, where people are more than twice as likely to be affected.

That is why Queen’s University Belfast is part of a €15M, five year European project called Cities@Heart, funded by the Innovative Health Initiative under Horizon Europe.

Working across seven cities including Belfast, Birmingham, Cork, Izmir, Łódź, Udine, and Utrecht, the project is developing new ways to improve awareness, early detection, prevention, and management of heart disease.

Belfast is leading on awareness, helping people understand their risk, spot the signs early, and know when to seek help.

By working with communities, healthcare professionals, and city partners, Cities@Heart aims to reduce inequalities and help people take action earlier for better heart health in Belfast and across Europe.
