The QUB-IEL Annual Lecture this week provided a timely opportunity to reflect on the changing foundations of international law.

Organised by Professor Billy Melo Araujo and introduced by Professor Aoife O’Donoghue, the lecture featured Dr Ntina Tzouvala (UNSW), whose work continues to shape critical debates in the field.

Her talk explored a series of foundational questions: the apparent retreat of the US from the international legal order it helped construct, the shifting dynamics of global capitalism, and the implications of these developments for international legal scholarship.

Drawing on critical, materialist, and interdisciplinary approaches, Dr Tzouvala offered a compelling framework for both understanding and reorienting the discipline.

The Talk is now available on our YouTube Channel;

That’s a wrap! The 2026 Law Tour finished on a high with a standout Panel Event and Networking Session at QUB One Elmwood

Students gained real insight from leading legal professionals: Emma McCloskey (Senior Associate, Mills Selig), Jordan Tucker (Legal Professional, Fieldfisher), Ross Gallagher (Banking & Finance Solicitor, Cleaver Fulton Rankin), Megan Kerr (Associate Solicitor, Lewis Silkin). From career journeys to insider advice, the panel delivered honest, practical guidance on what it takes to thrive in today’s legal world.

We extend our sincere thanks to our employer partners for making this year’s tour such a success.
A special acknowledgement goes to our colleagues in the QUB Careers, Employability & Skills team - Mark Gallagher and Terry O’Halon - whose hard work and coordination delivered a seamless two day programme.

The School of Law thanks them for the partnership, and Deirdre Timoney (School’s Employability Officer) for shaping and supporting the collaboration.
