Gender inequality in Leadership Positions, Baku, Azerbaijan

''Dr. Stefania Giannakaki from the SSESW and Dr. Eiman Abdel Meguid from the Centre for Biomedical Sciences Education presented results from the study ''Reducing Inequality in Educational Leadership Positions in Azerbaijan'' at the International Press Centre of Baku , Azerbaijan on 6 July 2017. The event was attended by more than 40 educational researchers, practitioners, and policy makers including representatives from the local Ministry of Education and the British Council in Baku. The study was funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund.''
Description
Women represent 78% of Azerbaijani secondary school teachers and only 32% of principals. This pilot study aimed to examine the experiences of women who successfully took up a senior leadership position in secondary schools in Baku and in surrounding villages, as well as their perceptions of the effect of gender on their career progression. More specifically, the study explored female school leaders':
(a) career paths and work experiences; (b) encountered obstacles & ways of overcoming these; (c) work-life balance; (d) leadership styles; and (e) views and experiences of gender discrimination.
A mixed methodology was employed, including a questionnaire survey with 107 female senior leaders (Principals and Vice Principals) from 36 secondary schools and semi-structured interviews with 10 leaders.
Key findings
Research findings showed that:

(a) Women in leadership positions tended to be the main housekeepers and carers of family members for extended periods of time during their careers.
(b) Female leaders did not appear to have experienced gender discrimination in their career progression. There were no explicit (structural) barriers in the school system for women becoming leaders.
(c) However, a male-dominated culture was apparent, affecting their careers in indirect (subtle) ways.
(d) Female leaders were relationship-oriented in their leadership styles, yet centralised and authoritative in decision-making. Younger women were less participative in decision-making (30-39 years) than other age groups.
(e) Female leaders enjoyed their work and appreciated the learning coming from it.

Congratulations to Team SWOT!
Congratulations to the team from SWOT! (Students Working Overseas Trust) which triumphed over 26 other university teams to win the national final of PwC’s Opportunity Challenge in London on 20 February 2017.
The team went head-to-head with teams from the UK's top universities in a general knowledge quiz-style competition. Opportunity Challenge gives student clubs and societies the chance to compete against each other with financial funding up for grabs to help support their club or society. This year SWOT won the Northern Ireland heat, securing £1,000 in funding. And then attended the national final which was held at an exclusive event in PwC's More London office where they battled it out to win an additional prize of £5,000. They have reaped the rewards for their student society and are planning to spend their winnings to purchase medical supplies for overseas projects.
PwC run the Opportunity Challenge competition on an annual basis and are looking for one team per club or society of between 2 - 3 people. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain the experience of competing with your peers at a national level and securing funding. Keep an eye on PwC’s website (http://www.pwc.co.uk/careers/get-involved.html) for more information and to find out when the registration for the 2017/2018 heats open.

Winners of 18th Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards Revealed

The sector’s finest were out in force as the 2017 Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards hosted by Medical Communications Ltd got underway.

Now in its 18th year, the annual event is dedicated to celebrating those whose exceptional expertise and contribution to their profession have transformed the provision of healthcare for the better. This year the 300-strong crowd gathered in Belfast within the elegant setting of the Europa Hotel.

Medical Student Leadership: Patrick Hickland & Cathal O’Hagan (joint
winners)

In September 2015, Patrick completed his fourth year obstetrics attachment in the Belfast Trust – a specialty which he had never previously considered for a career route. However, following this enlightenment, he has resourcefully – and successfully – sought out opportunities to experience more niche areas of obstetric practice, with the aim of informing his choice of path.
One of the areas in question that captured Patrick’s interest was the management of women with breech presentation. Having explored the literature in his own time, he attended the Belfast Trust’s unique Breech Clinic.

And after expressing his intrigue, Patrick was asked by the lead consultant of the team as to whether he’d like to complete a retrospective review of the service. Always eager to advance his education, Patrick recognised that this was an effective opportunity to gain experience.

As president of a medical charity society, SWOT, at Queen’s University, Belfast, Cathal has had the opportunity to continue developing the qualities which he deems integral to leadership – including team work, ethics, con dence, self-awareness, and courage.
In the role, Cathal has been effective in his mission to lead each sector to ensure cohesive development of the society and smooth running towards particular deadlines. One particular method of achieving this aim was by organising team-bonding sessions to allow those involved to engage personally and develop communication with one another.
When undertaking the organisation of one of SWOT’s key fundraisers – a large fashion show which raised £35,000 – Cathal’s assertive nature further progressed.

The judges found all shortlisted applicants to be of a very high standard, but two stood out.
Patrick’s application demonstrated how using initiative, being interested and being willing to take a lead can inspire and motivate others. Patrick clearly outlined a number of times where he identified a problem and worked quickly to find a solution; key skills for a doctor.
Cathal’s application illustrated that medical students can gain some of the skills necessary to be a successful leader through charitable work, and by having a bit of fun at the same time!
