We’re proud to see our former apprentice Thomas Wakefield IEng CMgr, member of Balfour Beatty's Ones to Watch leadership programme, featured in the Financial Times as part of a powerful piece on nurturing Gen Z talent.

The piece shines a light on how young people are motivated by purpose, wellbeing, skills and opportunities to grow and how forward-thinking employers are evolving their cultures and leadership models to help them thrive.

Reflecting on his experience, Thomas talked about influencing experienced teams, the power of emotional intelligence, and how continuous learning – through achieving my Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Manager (CMgr) status – has helped shape his approach to leadership.

Thomas is a shining example of where an apprenticeship in engineering can take you. We're very proud to have been a part of his journey into chartered management and look forward to seeing his journey develop 💫 ✨

Over this summer, we welcomed our second cohort of Grand Bahama Shipyard International Apprentices.

This year saw us up our intake from 16 to 20 students, for 12 weeks of hands-on training as they developed the skills they’ll need in their career in order to meet the demands of the Grand Bahamas Shipyard.

93 nautical miles east of Miami, Florida; their facility has the capability to dock any vessel up to 300 meters long and welcomes over 100 cruise ships, tankers and other commercial vessels every year.

The GBSL students enjoyed not only the educational exchange, but also a cultural one, with many of the young men experiencing international travel for the first time, embedding themselves in a city steeped in maritime heritage.

Excitingly, two of the students ended their experience with an interview with the BBC. Representing their employer and The Engineering College exemplarily on the breakfast radio show.

We wish all of the students every success in their careers and we look forward to welcoming a new cohort next summer.
