✨ The Power of Resilience with Gulnaz Brennan ✨

A huge thank you to Gulnaz Brennan for joining our Student Leadership Programme today. Gulnaz shared her powerful life experiences with us, including how her original Plan A didn’t work out, and how she went on to build a remarkable Plan B Resilience Plan that has now grown into a globally recognised institution - She Inspires ❤️

Her honesty, energy, and drive made for an incredibly motivating session. It was a message we all needed to hear: a reminder that setbacks can be the start of something even greater.

Thank you, Gulnaz, for empowering our students with your story and your strength. 🌟

🧠👩‍🔬Aspiring to STEM Dementia Research Talk👩‍🔬 🧠

To wrap up British Science Week and this year’s theme “Curiosity…what’s your question?”, our Aspiring to STEM Programme was delighted to welcome Dr Rebecca Williams from the University of Cambridge for an inspiring talk on dementia research.

Students explored:

🧠 What dementia is and how it can affect memory, behaviour, and perception
🧩 The different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, Vascular, Lewy Body, and Frontotemporal dementia
🔬 How scientists research dementia, from studying genetics and the brain to understanding environmental influences
👩‍🔬 The journey into science — from GCSEs and A-levels through to a PhD and a career in neuroscience research

Through real clinical case studies, students saw how symptoms can appear in different ways and how researchers and clinicians work together to understand and diagnose these complex conditions.

Dr Williams also shared why curiosity is at the heart of science — the drive to ask questions, explore ideas, and ultimately help improve people’s lives through research.

A huge thank you to Dr Williams for an engaging and thought-provoking session that encouraged our students to keep asking questions and exploring the world of STEM.

🥽✨Aspiring to STEM VR Session✨🥽

Aspiring to STEM at The Sixth Form Bolton recently hosted an incredible Virtual Reality learning experience for our students!

Across two different sessions, 80 students took part in 4 hours of interactive VR learning and exploration. From investigating tropical diseases like malaria to exploring the science behind X-rays and medical physics, students had the chance to step inside realistic scenarios and apply their knowledge in a completely new way.

The immersive experience allowed students to move beyond the classroom — diagnosing virtual patients, exploring medical environments, and understanding complex scientific concepts through hands-on interaction.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the sessions such a success, especially Dr Alana Matthews who ran these sessions for us. It was inspiring to see so many students engaging with STEM in such an innovative way. 🚀

📰14 additional students at The Sixth Form Bolton have qualified as Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAider®)📰

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. Sarah Ball, our assistant principal, is a qualified MHFA Adult trainer so offers this course to all of our students and staff regularly each academic year.

MHFA doesn’t teach us to be a therapist, but it teaches us to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and potentially stop a crisis from happening.

The students learnt to recognise warning signs of mental ill health and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone whilst keeping themselves safe.

Each of them learnt how to empower someone to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of symptoms. This included self-help books or websites, accessing therapy services through their GP, their school or place of work, online self-referral, support groups, and much more.

What’s more, they also gained an understanding of how to support positive wellbeing and tackle stigma in the world around us.

By becoming an MHFAider® with Mental Health First Aid England, they all have access to continuous support – well beyond their initial certification – so we have a large team of confident, empowered and motivated students to carry out their MFHA roles.

A huge congratulations to all of our MHFAider®s, they have achieved a fantastic qualification that will help and support themselves personally as well as friends, family, peers and colleagues.
