Bhopal Script Reading Recap 📖🇮🇳

In December 1984, the Bhopal Gas Tragedy became one of the world’s worst industrial disasters when toxic gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Thousands of people died and hundreds of thousands were left with lasting health and environmental consequences.

The Peace, Sustainability & Drama Societies had a powerful script reading session that revisited this tragedy, honored the victims, and had conversation about justice, corporate responsibility, and the importance of protecting communities. The script was written by our very own; Dr. Sudhir of the UoB Peace Department.

Neil Irving volunteered for three months in Palestine and Israel in late 2024 as a human rights monitor with the World Council of Churches Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). The programme was established following an appeal from church leaders in the Holy Land to create an international presence in the country, accompanying the local people and communities, offering protective presence and witnessing their daily struggles and hopes.

Neil Irving will be talking about daily life for Palestinians living under military occupation in the West Bank and telling the stories of some of the people he met.

This weekend, the ’s PSID Department hosted the International Crisis Response and Diplomacy Game 🇺🇳

The Peace Society’s President received the Best Delegate Award while the Vice President, Giulio Greco and society member Neil Irving received the Best Peace-Building Delegate Awards. Congratulations to the society members and all the participants from the department for their achievements. Thank you to the PSID department for the organizing this initiative.

According to the department:
For months, many of us - along with our students - have been grappling with difficult questions about the decline of a rules-based global order.

For those working in peace and development, these are not abstract debates, but daily dilemmas:
- What values do we stand for?
- What do peace and justice mean in an increasingly unpredictable world?
- And how do we make sense of it all?

Throughout participating in an International Crisis Response and Diplomacy Game, they are acting as representatives of organisations at a Special International Conference: “Promoting Peace, Security and Development in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Regions.” This practical exercise strengthens their skills and deepens their understanding of the importance of communication, multilateral discussions, and negotiation.

“Bring people together, work towards Peace”

Established in October, 2014 by a group of peace study students, the PEACE SOCIETY brings passionate students together with practitioners and academics in the peace fields to a create space to meet, integrate and enjoy their university experience together. As a departmental society, we seek to empower both graduate and undergraduate students across all stages to become more engaged with their passions in Environmental Justice, Arts for Peace, Peace Education, clean our streets, Sports for Peace and development and much more.

Peace is a calling, and it relies on the initiative of those willing to pursue it. As such, the PEACE SOCIETY serves as a vehicle for students to further their education, get to know each other and explore professional opportunities to work towards peace. The PEACE SOCIETY invites students to pursue their interests through a wide range of supported programming such as formal academic panels of experts in the field, roundtable forums and discussions, film screenings, practical workshops, networking events, social gatherings, protests on important issues and fundraising activities. We even have our own football team who defends peace against London's MA war programme at the Tolstoy Cup every year.

Throughout the last years with full support of the Peace Division, the society has established excellent connections with the Peace Studies administration, international organisations and local community groups, working together towards peace.

This year the Peace Society is organised in internal groups of members with similar interests who are organising events and activities around it. Our current activity groups are Art and Peace, Clean our Streets, (Cultural exchange with Chinese Society), Debating, Environment and Climate Justice, Football Team, (Mindfulness and Inner Peace), Peace Education, (Refugee Action) and Sport Development and Peace.
