A new term feels like a natural moment to pause and ask what you want to understand better, whether that's yourself, the people you work with, or the relationships that matter most to you.

Transactional Analysis offers a way into all of that. The Connexus TA 101 is a two-day introduction to TA, internationally recognised in its own right, and genuinely for anyone whose life involves other people. Work, family, friendships, the patterns that keep repeating. It's practical psychology you can actually use, not just in a therapeutic setting but in ordinary everyday life.

For those thinking about further training, it's also the first step on the pathway towards the Connexus counselling and psychotherapy programmes. But plenty of people come simply because they want to understand themselves a little better, and that's more than enough of a reason.

The course runs most months in Brighton and Hove. Find out more and book your place at connexusinstitute.com/ta101.

Have you come across Transactional Analysis before, in training, in therapy, or somewhere else? We'd love to know what first drew you to it.

Scott's words from last year's end-of-year evaluations have stayed with us.

As a Stage Three trainee on our transactional analysis psychotherapy programme, he wrote: *"Connexus don't just teach therapy, they prepare you holistically to be the best you can be in client work."*

It says something we care about a lot. Knowing theory is one thing. Being ready, as a whole person, to sit with another person in difficulty, that's something else. Scott named it well, and we're grateful he took the time to write it down.

If you're curious about what training with us looks like, you can find out more at connexusinstitute.com/courses.

What does "being prepared as a whole person" mean to you in your own practice or training? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

You know that moment when the praise lands and something in you is already looking for the catch?

It's not imposter syndrome in some vague, abstract way. In transactional analysis, it has a more specific name: script beliefs. These are conclusions we drew about ourselves early on, often without words for them, that settled into something that feels like fact. Beliefs about what we're allowed to be. What we've really earned. Whether we're the sort of person things like this happen to.

The strange thing is that evidence doesn't touch them. More qualifications, more good feedback, more years of experience, and the feeling is still there, wearing your work lanyard. That's the clue that it was never really about the evidence in the first place.

Once you have a name for it, it becomes a little easier to notice when it's operating. Not to argue with it, necessarily. Just to recognise it for what it is.

If this is something you're curious about exploring, our TA 101 weekend is where a lot of people first encounter this way of seeing themselves and others. Details at connexusinstitute.com.

Has this ever come up for you, or for someone you work with? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Patrick Brook is the trainer behind our Mental Health Familiarisation day on 16th October 2026.

Patrick is a TSTA, which means he holds a teaching and supervising qualification in Transactional Analysis. He brings that grounding in TA alongside a clear understanding of what trainees need to meet the UKCP's Mental Health Familiarisation requirements.

If you've been wondering whether this course would feel relevant to where you actually are in your training, it might help to know a bit about who's leading it.

A great way to re-start at Connexus after a much-needed break - a fabulous bank holiday 101 with Patrick and with Nicki Wisbey shadowing. How lovely it was as well to have Eben back, even just for a weekend, though this time as a participant on the 101 so this time on the receiving end of drinking the coffee rather than making it! Thanks to all for making this such a rich learning experience.

Our next TA101 course takes place Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th September 2026 with Lisa.

Ten compliments land and disappear. One criticism sticks around for days.

There's a concept in transactional analysis called strokes: units of recognition, the things people say or do that tell us we exist and matter. And it turns out we don't receive all of them equally. When our early script tells us we're not quite good enough, not quite competent, not quite likeable, recognition that confirms that belief tends to get through. Recognition that contradicts it often doesn't.

So the maths isn't really one to ten. It's that the filter is already deciding what counts as real.

This is the kind of thing that, once you've heard it named, you start noticing in all kinds of conversations. The colleague who deflects every piece of praise but replays the one difficult email. The client who can list ten things that went well and one that didn't, and knows which one they're going home with.

Knowing the term doesn't undo the filter, but it does make it a little easier to see when it's running.

If you're curious about this way of looking at everyday interactions, our TA 101 weekend is where a lot of people first encounter these ideas. Find out more at connexusinstitute.com

Does this resonate? We'd love to know if you've noticed the filter at work, in yourself, in clients, or in the people around you.

Rebecca trained with us in Stage Two last year, and this is what she wrote in her end-of-year evaluation.

"High quality, experienced and frankly inspirational teaching."

We don't take that lightly. Good teaching in transactional analysis training asks a lot, of students and tutors alike, and it means a great deal to hear it lands the way we hope it does.
