University of Brighton Climbing Club
The University of Brighton Climbing Club was established many years ago and has been a very popular club amongst students. We are a relaxed and friendly club welcoming all abilities. Climbing is a particularly sociable sport, you will have plenty of opportunities to meet many like-minded people; whether it's sharing common interests in outdoor activities or d
iscussing how to pass the crux of a project you’ve been working for weeks. We host fortnightly socials, including bar crawls, fancy dress and comedy nights, among many more, as well as pub visits after Monday’s Cockcroft session. As a member you will be informed of any day trips to nearby indoor climbing centres, as well as any outdoor climbing trips to locations around the country and further abroad to Fontainebleau in France. Where/When:
Mondays 19:30 - 21:00
Indoor climbing session at Cockcroft sports hall on the club's climbing wall, followed by a trip to our usual pub The Gladstone, stationed near by. Wednesdays 14:00 (until 17.00 entrance) - 22:00
The local bouldering gym ‘Boulder Brighton’ is offering a £2 pound entrance fee - including shoe hire - for Brighton University students at these times. Any other day of the week this package would cost £6.75 plus £3.50 shoe hire, so it offers a great opportunity to get involved at a highly subsidised price. The facilities offered are excellent - catering for beginners to pros, in a friendly and encouraging environment. "Bouldering is rock climbing stripped down to its raw essentials. Leaving behind ropes and harnesses and just using climbing shoes and a bag of chalk over safety mats, your challenge is to climb short but tricky bouldering "problems" using balance, technique, strength, and your brain.”
For more details about Boulder Brighton check out their webpage. Membership:
The first 2 weeks will be free to climb at the Cockroft Sports Hall - Moulsecoomb campus. After that it will be £10 for the whole year of climbing at the Cockroft sessions with a valid Sports Fed card (which can be obtained from the reception at Cockroft). Trips:
As a member of the club you will be made aware and allowed to participate in any outings to climbing centres such as High Sports Withdean and High Sports Crawley as well as outdoor locations such as Harrison's Rocks, Bowles, Eridge Green and Portland when the weather permits. Every year the Climbing Club goes on a trip to Fontainebleau - France. 'Font' is a world famous bouldering location; it is the largest and most developed bouldering area in the world. The trip takes place over the Easter holiday for a week, and promises to provide fantastic climbing and great memories. More information about getting involved in the trip will be available closer to the time. If you have any questions or suggestions please don't hesitate to ask!
