✨37 young women and non-binary students ➕ one Murray Edwards Maths summer school (free!) 🟰 supercharged Maths skills, STEP paper confidence, and empowerment✨

✨We’ve done the maths, and our three-day summer school for sixth formers planning to take the challenging advanced Maths STEP paper adds up to a huge success.

✨The rigorous STEP exam is required by some of the UK‘s most competitive undergraduate mathematics courses, including University of Cambridge.

✨Most schools can’t offer the specialist preparation that’s required. Our programme bridges that gap, offering tailored academic support and an empowering environment.

✨The packed agenda included step workshops, undergraduate style supervisions and group study, together with visits to the university Maths department and Library and a formal dinner in College.

✨Participants loved it. One said: “Awesome residential, super friendly and warm environment where you develop mathematically and have a fantastic time.”

✨If you’d like to come and check out the College, why not visit during the Cambridge undergraduate open days on 11th September? Visit our website and search for ‘open days’.

✨Sarah said: ‘I’m particularly attracted by the College’s distinctive identity, its commitment to academic excellence and opportunity, and the strength of its alumnae community. I’m also drawn to the College’s long-standing association with the visual arts and its recognition of the important role that creativity and culture can play within academic life.’

Acting President Dr Rachel Polonsky said: ‘Sarah impressed us all as a warm, collegiate and people-centred fundraising leader who values collaboration. I look forward very much to working with her – alongside the whole College community – as we develop and work to deliver the College’s 75th anniversary fundraising campaign and prepare for the next presidency.“

From Engineering at Cambridge to a career in AI 🤖

What can an Engineering degree University of Cambridge lead to?

For alumna Ana-Maria Marcu, a passion sparked by a computer vision lecture led to a career researching embodied intelligence at Wayve, working on AI systems that could shape the future of autonomous driving. 👉 Read Ana-Maria’s story and discover where Engineering could take you https://www.murrayedwards.cam.ac.uk/college-news/cambridge-engineering-career-ai

At Cambridge, Engineering students build foundations across mathematics, mechanics, materials, electronics, computing and more before specialising in later years. That flexibility means you don’t need to have your whole engineering career mapped out when you arrive.

Ana-Maria’s advice to future students? Build strong foundations, choose your later courses and projects thoughtfully, and take the time to develop real technical depth.

💡 Landmark research led by a Murray Edwards academic has uncovered major flaws in our analysis of how the oceans impact human life.

🌊 Miniscule swirls of water in the ocean depths are distributing heat, carbon and nutrients across the planet much faster than scientific models have estimated, with major implications for our understanding of environmental threats, according to a study led by Murray Edwards Bye Fellow Dr Laura Cimoli (pictured). The international team behind the research also included Alex Piotrowski, a Murray Edwards Fellow and Professor of Paleoclimatology at the University of Cambridge.

🌊 The new analysis of the effect of mixing generated by deep ocean turbulence has revealed significant flaws in the measurement of key processes, such as how much heat reaches Antarctic ice shelves or the level of climate-affecting carbon entering the deep ocean.

🌊 Forces such as sea level rise, planetary warming caused by excess carbon dioxide, fisheries collapse and extreme flooding will affect humanity within a single lifetime, not over hundreds or thousands of years as mathematical models had predicted, according to the international research team’s study, reported in the journal Nature Communications.

🌍📚 A taste of Cambridge, a world of languages!

Following the success of its first year, Murray Edwards College was delighted to welcome prospective language students to the DOME Languages Summer School - a unique, completely free two-day residential designed for 16-year-old women and non-binary students interested in studying languages at Cambridge.

The students' feedback says it all:

💬 “I’m now even more excited to study languages in the future!”

💬 “It was brilliant to find out about so many interesting languages.”

💬 “So helpful and enlightening, would 100% recommend attending!”

Across two inspiring days, students explored subjects including Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic; Asian and Middle Eastern Studies; Classics; History and Modern Languages; Linguistics; and Modern and Medieval Languages. They took part in taster lectures, academic workshops, admissions sessions and visits to subject departments, led by Cambridge Fellows, PhD students and current undergraduates.

And, of course, they got to experience some of the magic of Cambridge too! ✨ From exploring Murray Edwards’ beautiful gardens and dining in the College’s famous Dome, to visiting the Museum of Classical Archaeology and Language Library, and enjoying a picnic on The Backs, the programme offered a real taste of both academic and student life at Cambridge.

How wonderful to read about our Murray Edwards Garden in the The Guardian today. A delightful piece, celebrating the much-loved sweet william. Head gardener Caitlin Sparksman and her team hosted Alice Vincent on a garden tour, where she describes the 'utterly magical' cutting bed, with poppies, cosmos, cornflowers, sweetpeas, nasturtiums and sweet williams.

It's wonderful to see recognition for the care, creativity and expertise that goes into maintaining our gardens - not only as beautiful spaces, but as places that support biodiversity, wellbeing and our community.

Thank you to Alice Vincent for visiting and for shining a light on the work of our Garden Team. Do you come and see for yourself and enjoy our stunning gardens in the beautiful sunshine.

Easy to grow, hardy and charming, these once-maligned flowers are having a much-deserved comeback
