The Centre for Child, Adolescent & Family Research is a multidisciplinary research institute within the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge. The Centre has undertaken pioneering and influential research since the 1960s, and has an international reputation for its investigations of families and children. Research Interests

Our interests cover children, parents and family relati

onships. Our research has dealt with topics from pregnancy, through all the years of childhood, to partnerships and parenthood, and later life. Although the majority of our members are psychologists, our multidisciplinary team includes sociologists, anthropologists, biologists and bioethicists. The Centre has close connections with schools, assisted reproduction and neonatal clinics, adoption services, child psychiatry and clinical genetics departments, and family law professionals. Experts from a variety of disciplines and organisations talk about their work, and we also discuss our own projects. These meetings attract a diverse audience. Funding

The Centre receives funding from research councils, government departments and charitable foundations. Examples of bodies currently providing funding include the Wellcome Trust, the ESRC and the US National Institutes of Health. Funders are listed under the individual projects. Some babies have a tougher start in life. One in three babies admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit will fail their school readiness assessment at age five, with consequences lasting into adulthood.

Our new project aims to identify those babies at greatest risk and give them a helping hand. Babies’ Longitudinal Outcomes, Omics and Milestones Study (BLOOMS) will be one of the flagship programmes inside the Cambridge Children's Research Institute at the planned new Cambridge Children's Hospital.
