Join fellow alumni in Berlin for a special event on Thursday 8 October at Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, widely regarded as one of Europe's foremost museums of contemporary art.

The morning will begin with a guided tour of the museum, offering a fantastic opportunity to explore its renowned collections and exhibitions, followed by lunch with fellow members of the Churchill community.

Results from our 3rd annual Big Butterfly Count 🦋

Members of the Grounds & Gardens team (Kath, Ben and Charlie) completed another year of citizen science with the following findings:
👉 11 species recorded across College grounds, matching last year's total almost exactly
👉Meadow Brown and Small White were the most frequently spotted
👉Marbled Clover and Jersey Tiger moths also recorded during the count

The drought conditions meant the herbaceous border had passed its flowering peak by the time of the count, so sightings shifted elsewhere, highlighting the value of the College's other planting areas like the long grass around Storey's Way and the self-sown meadow plants near the compost area.

Beyond the official count, Charlie's ongoing recording added a further 13 butterfly species and a Latticed Heath Moth sighted this year, including a rare White-letter Hairstreak and a striking Silver-washed Fritillary. Students have been spotting too: Amy Walpole photographed a Cinnabar moth by the beehives and a Mint Moth in the raised beds.

Tucked away from the busier parts of Churchill, the student garden at the back of 70s Storey's Way is a favourite spot for College members. With its raised beds, greenhouse and secluded seating areas, it's an ideal place to grow produce, read, or simply relax outside.

Through conversations with the College’s Grounds and Gardens team, Churchill postgrad architecture student Max Hubbard discovered that the greenhouse was running low on storage, and that people wanted somewhere to work and gather. That idea grew into a proposal for a simple, sustainable pavilion, supported by a grant of £500 from the College’s Tizard Student Opportunities Fund.

The design takes its shape from the bamboo bean wigwams already growing in the garden. The structure was built over two days using timber, plywood, and reclaimed materials from Churchill's own stores, with help from friends, students, and staff.

It's built to change over time. Students can repair it, adapt it, or take it apart and rebuild it as their needs shift.

Churchill alumni were back on the water for this year's CRA Town Bumps, with a crew made up of former students, current students and a few last-minute recruits taking on the challenge.

The idea began earlier in the year when alumni started discussing entering a Churchill crew into the event. Despite facing a few hurdles along the way, including finding a boat and brushing off some rowing rust, the team came together with support from Churchill College Boat Club and X-Press Boat Club.

Racing as X-Press O2, the crew, known as The Shovellers, enjoyed an impressive week on the river. They secured bumps on days one and three, finishing the event +2 overall, with several crew members celebrating their first-ever bump.

Reflecting on the experience, organiser Chris Hughes highlighted both the team's success on the water and the chance to reconnect with fellow Churchill rowers.

Congratulations to everyone involved on a fantastic achievement. We're delighted to see the Churchill rowing community continuing to thrive long after graduation, and we look forward to seeing more alumni crews in action in the future. 🚣💜
