We believe in the power of education for all.

Since 2017, we’ve supported Jesuit Worldwide Learning - Higher Education at the Margins Association to deliver its Global English Language (GEL) programme to more than 32,000 students worldwide.

Our new report evaluates how the programme is helping refugee learners in Kenya and returnee learners in Iraq build confidence, connect with others, and access pathways to further study and employment.

90% of respondents said learning English had improved their lives.

Sarah, a GEL graduate and facilitator in Kakuma camp, Kenya, describes English as her “way out,” adding that education can transform the lives of women.
Dalwaz, a Yazidi student in Sinjar, Iraq, says the programme has given her “hope and dreams and the power to continue”.

“Education often serves a bridge between a disrupted past and a more hopeful future," said Brigita Seguis, lead author and head of impact evaluation for English.

How do you avoid feeling embarrassed when you make a mistake in front of your students?⁣

Here are some of our favourite tips to help you learn from your mistakes and avoid feeling embarrassed:⁣
⁣
⁣
• Admit that there is a mistake, correct it, then move on with the lesson. Your students will quickly forget it, we promise!⁣
⁣
⁣
• If a student points out your mistake, jokingly say, ‘I’m glad you spotted that! I did that to test if you were paying attention.’⁣
⁣
⁣
• If you don’t feel you can use humour, just simply thank the student and continue with the lesson.⁣
⁣
Most importantly, at the end of the lesson, remember to reflect on why that mistake happened so you can learn from it (e.g. were you unprepared?).
