Dr Stephen Turton is to lead a project to digitise the letters which enabled the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, after receiving a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant.

Dr Turton, who joined Gonville & Caius College as a Research Fellow in October 2021, will undertake the five-year research project at the University of Oxford. He is one of 421 early-career researchers to receive funding worth €705 million in total, the ERC said.

Dr Turton is also celebrating an award for work completed during his Caius Research Fellowship. His first book, Before the Word Was Q***r: Sexuality and the English Dictionary, 1600–1930, has been awarded a prize by the European Society for the Study of English at the organisation’s annual conference in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

As schools return this week and the Cambridge deadline of October 15 nears, Caius London Outreach Officer Sidrah Zubair discusses her work.

Sidrah is passionate about giving young people an opportunity to reach their potential. As London Outreach Officer for Gonville & Caius College, Sidrah’s role is to support them to do just that by encouraging aspiration.

While a direct aim of Sidrah’s goal is attracting applications to Caius, a wider aim is promoting the University of Cambridge, a university education and a desire to further education. The focus of her work at Caius is on Year 10 and Year 12 students, working specifically with Caius’ Link Areas – seven London boroughs (Barnet, Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lewisham, Newham and Waltham Forest) – under the Cambridge scheme.

Sidrah, who taught in schools for four years after attending Goldsmiths, Durham and King’s College London universities for her various degrees, says: “I want to show young people you can apply for the course that you're actually passionate about and the university you're passionate about. And if it happens to be Cambridge, and if it happens to be a particular course at Cambridge, then you should very well go for it.”

Funding for the arts sector has faced significant cuts since 2010, but the situation has been aggravated following the pandemic. Museums and galleries have been forced to adapt to survive.

"Covid was a watershed," says Catherine Putz (Modern & Medieval Languages 1982), a heritage sector veteran and now freelance public programmes producer. "Post-pandemic, museums have had to pivot to be able to demonstrate in much more tangible ways what benefits they offer local communities."

Julia Llewellyn Smith (Modern and Medieval Languages 1987) estimates she has conducted over 4000 interviews during her career as a journalist, with her subjects including Tom Hanks, Jimmy Carter and Princess Anne. She has written for numerous broadsheets and tabloids, alongside penning a non-fiction book and seven novels — although, when it comes to writing, she does not identify so much with the latter.

"Novel writing is a very lonely, very gruelling job," says Julia. “None of the authors I know enjoy what they do. An author friend of mine described it as like having eight children with all the pain, and you don’t even love them when they come out.”

In 2026 alone, The Times has published Julia’s interviews with ex-Spice Girl Mel B, actor Alan Cu***ng and dynastic British media personality Brooklyn Beckham, to name a few.

It is no laughing matter, but an Edinburgh Fringe comedy night has raised £20,000 for brain cancer research.

Professor Richard Gilbertson’s laboratory at The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute on the Biomedical Campus is the beneficiary of Underbelly Festival’s Big Brain Tumour Benefit, which took place on Wednesday 19 August, via the Angel Child Fund charity.

Nish Kumar, Rosie Jones and Justin Mooorhouse were three of the big-name comics in the line-up for the show which took place at Edinburgh University’s McEwan Hall.

Ten years ago, Candida Meyrick (English 1990) was diagnosed with cancer. It was, in her words, "the mother of all wakeup calls," and prompted her to realign herself with what she felt really mattered.

"One of my children was really into birds of prey," she says. "He was drawing them; he would get excited by them. And it reawakened my own buried love of them, which dates back to when I was a small child in Yorkshire looking at kestrels."

And so, whilst acquiring her female Harris Hawk, Bird, in 2020 may have felt extraordinary, it did not feel outlandish to Candida.

Gonville & Caius College Fellow Professor Steven Barrett is part of a UK-based consortium conducting the world’s first airspace trial aimed at reducing condensation trails – known as contrails – that could greatly reduce aviation’s global warming impact.

Backed by the UK Government, 'Operation Blue Skies' brings together partners, including the University of Cambridge, to evaluate AI-driven flight path adjustments across North Atlantic airspace.

Operation Blue Skies is a £5 million, 30-month programme, partly funded by £2.65 million from the Department for Transport. It includes two operational trials to be conducted during the winter months across NATS-controlled Shanwick oceanic airspace, the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor.

Gonville & Caius College will this autumn welcome over 80% of incoming UK undergraduates from the state sector.

“This is the first time in our history we have had over 80% of UK students from state schools and colleges,” said Dr Chris Scott, Caius’ Tutor for Admissions and Outreach.

“We are delighted to maintain a student body which more closely represents the diversity of post-16 education in the UK. This shows the success of our wide-reaching outreach initiatives.

“The results of our students throughout their degrees at Caius show that our strategies to widen participation have, naturally, increased the academic performance of our student body. We continue to seek to admit candidates with the greatest academic potential, irrespective of background.

“We look forward to welcoming our incoming students in late September – and we look forward to receiving applications for 2027 entry from aspiring students in October.

“I’d also like to send my congratulations to the many Caius candidates who will be finding out today that they have received a place at another college through the Summer Pool.”

Amber Gooding (HSPS 2023) left an impression at Gonville & Caius College and was rewarded ahead of her graduation by peers and academics alike.

Amber in July received the Len Sealy Fun Award ahead of General Admission. The prize recognises a student’s overall contribution to College life.

No matter the year group, those at Caius at the same time as Amber would recognise her and many would know her. A sparkling personality, blonde hair often splashed with pink, fashionable even when in Crocs and occasionally seen eating her breakfast from her Gonville Court window.

Amber read Human, Social and Political Sciences, specialising in Anthropology, but beyond her academic pursuits she was busy too. She was a Caius Schools access ambassador and contributed designs for admissions tote bags and stickers. She knew students in years above and below – her College ‘mum’ is now one of her best friends.

As Gonville & Caius College Students’ Union Freshers’ Representative in her first year and the start of her second year, she supported incoming undergraduates’ transition to Caius by organising events in freshers’ week and providing guidance, getting to know those in the year below.

She also served as the GCSU Women’s and Non-Binary Officer and the College netball captain, while also being part of the FemGenSoc committee.

She says: “I’m very grateful. The Master announced it at graduation dinner. I recognise that I have done quite a bit, and it’s nice to be praised for something different.

“I see it as the ability to hold a network almost, but not in a corporate networking way. In a ‘she knows what I would need if I asked her’ kind of way.”

Amber believes it was easy to have such a network at Caius, having made a late decision to choose the College in the first place.

Jasmine Habgood will take up a place on the MSc Performance Science programme at the Royal College of Music in September following almost three years as a staff member at Gonville & Caius College.

Jasmine joined Caius in October 2023 and has since achieved a Level 4 Apprenticeship with Distinction in PR & Communications. She began her role as Choir Apprentice: PR & Communications Assistant before being offered a permanent position as Music PR Assistant.

Jasmine is particularly grateful to Precentor Matthew Martin and Choir Administrator Claire Wheeler for their support, and enjoyed working with members of The Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, past and present.
