Dr Fran Eastwood, supervisor in English, is organising a one-day conference on 17th-century masques. She said:

"Masques combined flamboyant costume and jewellery with novel design and moving mechanical sets provoking wonder among the spectators. Think Olympic opening ceremony as a rough modern-day analogy!"

'The Disruptive Stage: Stuart Masques and Court Entertainment’ takes place on 22 April 2027 and includes an early evening performance by a trio from Dowland's Foundry.

Speakers include:

Anne Daye, The Historical Dance Society
Alison Findlay, Lancaster University
Tamsin Lewis, The Courtauld
Harry McCarthy, USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences
Susan North, Curator of Fashion before 1800, Victoria and Albert Museum
Barbara Ravelhofer, Durham University
Emma Whipday, Newcastle University

Christ’s has a long association with the visual arts. Visitors to the gardens and grounds will see many sculptures.

This sculpture is of alumnus Jagadis Chandra Bose who was born in present-day Bangladesh and studied Natural Sciences in the 1880s. He was a pioneer of wireless transmission by electro magnetic waves. The sculpture was commissioned by the Bose Institute Calcutta in 2008 and is on the approach to the Yusuf Hamied Lecture Theatre.

✨ The College also runs a picture loan scheme for students who can choose artwork from the collection to hang on their walls during the time that they live in College.

1 September is World Letter Writing Day.

Charles Darwin, alumnus, wrote and received thousands of letters. This example (MS 53 Fox 1) written to his second cousin William Darwin Fox, also an alumnus, reminds us of his passion for entomology - the study of insects - which began while he was an undergraduate at Christ's.

On 12 June 1828, he wrote:

"My dear Fox, I am dying by inches, from not having any body to talk to about insects ..."

Darwin's letters are catalogued at the Darwin Correspondence Project https://www.darwinproject.ac.uk/
