The National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) is a state-of-the-art postgraduate engineering facility established and managed by structural integrity specialist TWI. NSIRC unites academia and industry, working closely with lead academic partner Brunel University London and more than 20 other respected universities, as well as founder sponsors BP and the Lloyd's Register Foundation. Th

e collaborating partners provide academic excellence to address the need for fundamental research, as well as high-quality, industry-relevant training for the next generation of structural integrity engineers. NSIRC advances fundamental research to support the following objectives:

Safe operation of products and structures
Development of innovative, fit-for-purpose technologies and design rules
Engineering solutions for long-term asset management. To achieve these objectives NSIRC is pursuing advancements in areas including: risk-based management, engineering critical assessment, non-destructive testing, structural health and condition monitoring, and health management for use in industrial applications.

We are excited to share the achievement of Nigar Gul Malik, an alumna of , who has successfully defended her PhD! Her research delves into developing safer and more environmentally-friendly solutions for corrosion protection.

Nigar’s groundbreaking project, sponsored by the TWI Ltd and awarded by the University of Leicester, addresses compliance with REACH regulations while promoting sustainability across various industries. With a solid academic foundation in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, her innovative work focuses on creating new coatings to replace traditional cadmium coatings, significantly minimising environmental and health risks.

One of her key findings is that her pioneering Zn-Ni coatings provide corrosion resistance that is 5 to 6 times greater than that of pure zinc coatings!

Now recruiting for a PhD Studentship in South Wales, funded by TWI Ltd and awarded by The University of Manchester! 🔍 The research topic focuses on the "Advancement and Application of Microwave Techniques for Non-Destructive Testing."

With the increasing use of materials like glass fibre reinforced plastic in sectors such as marine and renewable energy, it's crucial to develop non-invasive methods for detecting defects. Innovations in microwave technology may enhance our ability to inspect these materials, enabling the identification of small flaws while scanning large components without any contact.

Introducing João Pedro Madeira Araujo, a new student in industrial PhD programme at TWI Ltd. João's research focuses on improving 3D printing by studying the way powders are used in the process.

By collecting and analyzing a lot of data, João hopes to use computer models to understand how to make 3D printing more reliable and better quality.

Francesco Careri, an PhD student, recently co-authored a research paper on using artificial intelligence to improve metal 3D printing through additive manufacturing.

The paper, titled "A Novel Porosity Prediction Framework Based on Reinforcement Learning for Process Parameter Optimisation in Additive Manufacturing," has been published in the prestigious Scripta Materialia journal.

Dr. Leonardo Stella, an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham, led the research in collaboration with experts from various institutions, including Dr. Raja Khan at TWI Ltd. This groundbreaking study introduces a state-of-the-art framework based on reinforcement learning (RL) for predicting porosity in metal laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF).

The application of reinforcement learning in L-PBF for porosity prediction represents a significant advancement in the field of additive manufacturing, particularly in the production of aluminium alloy components.

Ali Bakır, a PhD candidate at and currently an Engineer at TWI Ltd, has been at the forefront of developing innovative methods for inspecting and fixing high-strength aluminium 7075 components.

During his time at TWI, Ali's work has effectively tackled traditional repair obstacles, and his hands-on experience has played a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic innovations and industry requirements.

Ali's PhD research, which was sponsored by Lloyd's Register Foundation and granted by Coventry University, centres around evaluating the structural integrity of aluminium 7075 components that have been repaired using technology.

Through his industry-focused PhD and his current role at TWI, Ali is actively pushing the boundaries of progress in the aerospace sector.
