On Saturday 5 September we welcomed members of the 1352 Foundation Society and Master’s Circle of Benefactors to College for a full programme of events to celebrate their philanthropic commitment to the College.

Guests heard from Bursar Richard Leather and Second Bursar Simon Shinkfield on developments across the College estate, ongoing projects and priorities, and plans for the years ahead.

Guild Fellow David Mogford (m.1972) then kindly shared the story behind Tenuta il Finale, his boutique w**ery in Piemonte, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of producing world-class w**es while preserving the traditions and character of the region.

This was followed by a special musical performance in Chapel from acclaimed soprano and College Choir singing teacher Rachel Godsill, accompanied by internationally renowned pianist Marie-Noelle Kendall, on the recently renovated Steinway piano.

After enjoying a delicious lunch prepared by Ilias Arsenis and his talented team, the day drew to close with a fascinating In Conversation session with Fellow Professor Pasco Fearon, Director of the Centre for Family Research at the University of Cambridge and a leading developmental and clinical psychologist. His research explores how caregiving influences children’s emotional, cognitive and psychological development. He leads the Children of the 2020s birth cohort study in England and co-directs the UK-wide Generation New Era Study, working closely with policymakers and practitioners to improve outcomes for children and families in the UK and internationally.

The 1352 Foundation Society recognises, in their lifetime, those who choose to make a gift to Corpus in their will. The Master’s Circle of Benefactors recognises donors who have given £25,000 and above during their lifetime.

Going to see the Bayeux Tapestry in London? If so, be sure to look out for the image of a certain supper that may well have been inspired by the Augustine Gospels (CCCC MS328).

The eleventh-century Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the events leading up to and including the Norman Conquest of 1066, is a 70-meter long embroidered panel that was probably made in Canterbury at St Augustine’s Abbey where the Augustine Gospels were then housed. Now, of course, they are held in the Parker Library at Corpus Christi College.

In the scene depicting a feast, Bishop Odo of Bayeux and his nobles are arrayed around a circular table, very similar to the Last Supper panel in the Augustine Gospels. Odo is also shown in a pose similar to the figure of Christ, blessing his w**e just as Christ was shown blessing his food.

The end of an era! Yesterday we said goodbye to Tim Rhodes, our College Boatman for the last 34 years. Second Bursar Simon Shinkfield thanked him for all his years of service and support for the students, and recent boat club Captains presented him with a plaque. We were also lucky to be joined by Tim's wife Nina, whom many at Corpus will know from her own long service next door at Pembroke College Cambridge. We wish Tim the very best in his retirement and hope to see him cheering on the crews out on the river.
