Can mathematics help us make sense of something as unpredictable as human behaviour? 🤔

In the latest episode of the Isaac Newton Institute’s Living Proof podcast, we meet Dr Ellen Zapata-Webborn from the UCL Energy Institute. Her work explores how data and mathematical modelling can offer a clearer picture of the choices people make, and how those insights could help us plan systems such as energy networks and healthcare more effectively.

The conversation follows Ellen’s career through mathematics, industry and academic research. It also looks at the stories hidden within smart meter data, from patterns in household energy use to wider questions about how people respond to information and changing circumstances.

Ellen also reflects on organising our Mathematics for Human Behaviour programme and why collaboration across disciplines creates new ways to approach difficult, real-world questions.

Applications close tomorrow for our Network Support for the Mathematical Sciences scheme.

Run jointly by the Isaac Newton Institute and the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research, the scheme supports mathematical sciences networks across the UK. It helps communities create new connections, sustain collaboration and provide spaces where researchers can exchange ideas and develop shared activity.

If you are building or strengthening a mathematical sciences network, this is your chance to apply this year. The next time applications will be reviewed is in February 2027.

With the weather (finally!) turning a bit cooler, it's been a great week to talk all about dynamic systems and operator methods.

Bringing together 68 researchers from 56 different institutions in 19 countries, this workshop, part of our one-month "Operator methods for dynamical systems" programme, has been a great opportunity to forge new collaborations and connections.

We particularly loved seeing Isaia Nisoli (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) wielding the Seminar Room pointer to great effect.

What happens when a wave hits an object? 🌊 It scatters, bouncing repeatedly off surrounding surfaces to create a complex web of interactions—a phenomenon known as multiple wave scattering. This process shapes how energy moves through our world, driving fascinating phenomena from rainbows and invisibility cloaks to practical tools like ultrasound imaging.

Over the past two weeks, researchers from around the world gathered at the Isaac Newton Institute for the workshop 'Multiple Wave Scattering in Locally Resonant Materials with Degrees of (Dis)Order'.

Building on momentum from the original 2023 programme, the event focused on advancing the mathematical design and analysis of metamaterials—pushing beyond traditional ordered structures into complex, graded, and time-varying configurations.
