📅 On this day in 1993, Sir Andrew Wiles announced his proof of Fermat's Last Theorem at the Isaac Newton Institute.

For more than 350 years, the problem had challenged generations of mathematicians. Wiles' announcement, delivered during a series of lectures at INI, became one of the most celebrated moments in modern mathematics.

Thirty-three years later, the proof continues to inspire mathematicians and serves as a reminder of the perseverance, creativity and curiosity that drive mathematical discovery. We've even still got the blackboard it was written on!

If you have a math-related topic that would benefit from sustained, in-depth collaboration, we want to hear from you. We are now inviting proposals for programmes in 2029.

Because world-class research programmes take time to assemble, we plan two to three years in advance to set you up for maximum impact.

How can modern machine learning tools be combined with the inferential rigour of semiparametric and nonparametric frameworks to unlock valid, robust causal inference? 🤔

At our final workshop of the "Causal inference" programme, with just over 90 in-person attendees and over 50 online attendees, we welcome all discussions and collaborations.

Looking to catch up on this week's activity so far? Meet two of our speakers:

👉 Angela Zhou (University of Southern California) presented "Batch-Adaptive Causal Annotations and Beyond." She demonstrated how combining AI with optimal batch sampling can match the precision of 361 random data samples using only 90 optimised ones, saving a massive 75% of the data labelling budget for homelessness street outreach services.

👉 Aurélien Bibaut (Netflix) presented "Instrumental Variable Analysis Without Structural Equations." His talk introduced a new approach to debiased inference on least-squares solutions to inverse problems, proving that by avoiding rigid assumptions around exact solutions, the inferential procedure remains entirely valid even when standard structural models don't hold exactly.

How can data help us understand cause and effect?

A new collection of articles from Plus Magazine explores the mathematics and statistics behind one of today’s most important research challenges: how to draw reliable conclusions from data.

From medical trials and public health questions to social policy and artificial intelligence, causal inference helps researchers move beyond patterns and correlations towards evidence that can support real-world decisions.

The articles introduce ideas such as cognitive bias, correlation versus causation, selection bias, randomised controlled trials, hypothesis testing and directed acyclic graphs — all connected to our current INI programme Causal inference: From theory to practice and back again.

The programme brings together researchers from across statistics, medicine and public health, computer science, economics and social science to strengthen the foundations of causal inference and explore its many applications.

Congratulations to our former Director, Professor David Abrahams, on being awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the King's Birthday Honours, for services to Mathematical Sciences.

Professor Abrahams, who is currently Professor of Applied Mathematics and has been a Fellow of orpus Christi College since 2016, served as Director of the Institute from 2016 to 2021.

As an eminent figure in applied mathematics, he specialises in the mathematical modelling and analysis of waves in physics and engineering. Throughout his career, David has been a leading figure within the national and international mathematics communities, having served as President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and Scientific Director of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS).

This prestigious honour is an outstanding recognition of his lifelong dedication, leadership, and profound impact within the international mathematical community.

Think your maths-related topic could benefit from in-depth, sustained collaboration?

We’re now inviting proposals for Isaac Newton Institute programmes taking place in 2029:

INI programmes bring together international research communities for extended periods of collaboration, creating space for new ideas, partnerships and breakthroughs across the mathematical sciences and related disciplines.

We consider programmes across the spectrum of mathematical sciences, from applied topics like human behaviour (https://www.newton.ac.uk/event/mhb) and marine technology (https://www.newton.ac.uk/event/mmt/) to fundamental questions in group theory (https://www.newton.ac.uk/event/ggi/) or harmonic analysis (https://www.newton.ac.uk/event/fha/).

It takes a lot to organise a programme and make sure the right people are here, which is why we plan two or three years in advance.

Human behaviour is messy. It can be hard to identify and quantify all the variables that make people do the things they do. But across a range of domains, including economics, public health, and energy systems, it’s important to be able to predict how people will act.
