Last week, we welcomed postgraduate researchers to our two-day Career Planning Beyond Academia event at the University of Kent.
Across the two days, participants explored their values, motivations and transferable skills, took part in interactive career development activities, and heard honest insights from PhD alumni and employer panellists about navigating careers beyond academia. From CV and interview workshops to networking conversations and reflective exercises, it was inspiring to see researchers engaging so openly with their future possibilities.
A huge thank you to our speakers, alumni and employer panellists for sharing their experiences so generously, and to everyone who took part with such enthusiasm and curiosity.
We hope everyone left feeling more confident, connected and empowered to take the next steps in their career journey. ✨

Reflecting on yesterday’s Research Café ☕
Huge thanks to our brilliant presenters for sharing such thought-provoking work:

🧠 Monica Piferrer Gomez — “What Is Illness and Does It Matter?” — a fascinating look at how we understand and define illness in society.

🐄📚 Bunty Davidson — “Watership Down for Cows – from small animal vet nursing to large animal historian” — a journey across species and storytelling that opened our eyes to animal histories in a whole new way.

Curiosity, conversation, and community — exactly what a Research Café is all about. Until next time! 💬
