Last month our Stage One Architecture students visited Paris for the first field trip following the COVID pandemic 🇫🇷🧑‍🎨🥐🏙

They had the chance to visit many of the architectural gems of the city, including:

✨The Pompidou Centre
✨Musee d'Orsay
✨Bibliothèque nationale de France
✨The Arab Institute
✨Pavilion de l'Arsenal
✨Villa la Roche
✨Jardin du Luxembourg & Jardin du Palais Royal
✨Sacre-Coeur
✨L'eglise Saint-Jean de Montmartre
✨Saint Etienne-du-Mont & the tiny orthodox Saint-Julien-le Pauvre
✨The reconstruction of the fire-damaged Notre Dame Cathedral

Café stops were frequent in the sunny but cold weather and a highlight of all was the classic Bouillon Chartier - a huge 1900 eatery with an army of bustling waiters.

A big thank you to Gerry Adler, our first year coordinator, who led this fantastic trip! 👏

Professor Henrik Schoenefeldt's influential book: Rebuilding the Houses of Parliament, has been released in paperback. 📖👏

The book provides an exploration of the history and politics behind the rebuilding of the UK Houses of Parliament from an environmental perspective and uncovers how environmental concerns have fundamentally shaped the history and architecture of the Houses of Parliament. Professor Schoenefeldt celebrates and critically examines the evolution of the environmental principles underlying the architectural features of the Houses of Parliament to prioritise air quality, energy efficiency and thermal comfort.

It is also the first book to retrace the role that the renowned Scottish physician Dr David Boswell Reid played in developing the environmental design of the Houses of Parliament, engaging with issues of energy efficiency, atmospheric pollution comfort and public health.

Congratulations to Professor Samer Bagaeen, who has been working on a major report on surface water flooding, 'Surface Tensions - Working together against flash flooding' which is launching today.

The report looks to examine how the increasing issue of surface water flooding is being managed in England and where extreme pressure is being placed on existing houses and increasing their surface water flooding risk.

Professor Bagaeen, said: “To tackle surface flooding, the next revision of the National Planning Policy Framework must require local plans to demonstrate how lead local flood authorities have assessed aggregate risk across the whole area, as well as how flood impacts will be avoided, controlled, mitigated, and managed.

“And at the level of place, for infrastructure and procurements concerning flooding, Lead Local Flood Authorities should move away from human-engineered barriers and toward natural drainage systems that work to slow the flow of surface water and relieve pressure on sewers.”

Some fantastic early concept models 💭

Stage 2 students created these in our undergraduate Architecture and Landscape module. It is really important to document architectural projects from their early concept to their final design. In this way we see students ideas evolve and develop.

The course focuses upon the relationship of landscape and architectural, particularly through the siting of a building, site planning, and elementary planting design and landscape detailing.
