A journey traced through movement, water and pause - MArch student explores the River Taff as a threshold, rather than a boundary; a place seen, but rarely touched. A temporary floating pavilion tests how architecture can create safe proximity to water, inviting observation, stillness and connection within the city’s continuous flow.

Unit 8, ‘Nomadic Studio’

Taith wedi’i holrhain drwy symudiad, dŵr a seibiant - mae’r myfyriwr MArch yn archwilio afon Taf ar sail trothwy yn hytrach na ffin; lle a welir ond yn aml yn anghyffwrdd. Mae pafiliwn arnofiol dros dro yn profi sut y gall pensaernïaeth greu agosrwydd at ddŵr a bod yn ddiogel, gan wahodd y broses o arsylwi, llonyddwch a bod mewn cysylltiad, a hynny yn llif parhaus y ddinas.

In our first-year Explorations in Architectural Design studio, lecturers Dr Melina Guirnaldos Diaz and Erfan Zamanigoldeh ran a paper structures workshop inspired by Josef Albers.

“The session encouraged students to explore alternative approaches to the design process, emphasising Year 1 as a formative stage in which architectural thinking develops through experimentation and opens up multiple ways of thinking and making,” noted Melina.

Erfan said: “I usually run this exercise with master’s students as an early activity in computational design. There’s something great about seeing design curiosity before tools, software, and workflow habits take over. At first glance, it’s just folding paper. But actually, it’s a gentle introduction to parametric form-finding and a way of nudging students towards computational thinking through material exploration. No computers at this stage. Just hands, structure, behaviour, failure, iteration and discovery. And that’s exactly the point.”

Yn ein stiwdio Archwiliadau mewn Dylunio Pensaernïol y flwyddyn gyntaf, cynhaliodd y darlithwyr Dr Melina Guirnaldos Diaz ac Erfan Zamanigoldeh weithdy strwythurau papur wedi’i ysbrydoli gan Josef Albers.

“Yn ystod y sesiwn anogwyd myfyrwyr i ystyried dulliau amgen o ymdrin â’r broses ddylunio, gan bwysleisio bod y flwyddyn gyntaf yn gyfnod ffurfiannol lle mae meddwl pensaernïol yn datblygu drwy arbrofi ac yna’n agor sawl ffordd o feddwl a chreu,” eglurodd Melina.

Dywedodd Erfan: “Fel arfer, rwy’n cynnal y gweithgaredd hwn gyda myfyrwyr gradd meistr fel gweithgaredd ar ddechrau dylunio cyfrifiadurol. Mae’n wych gweld chwilfrydedd dylunio cyn i offer, meddalwedd ac arferion llif gwaith gymryd drosodd. Ar yr olwg gyntaf, dim ond plygu papur yw hwn. Ond mewn gwirionedd, mae’n gyflwyniad ysgafn i ganfod ffurfiau parametrig ac yn ffordd o ysgogi myfyrwyr tuag at feddwl cyfrifiadurol drwy ystyried deunyddiau. Does dim cyfrifiaduron yn y cam yma. Dim ond dwylo, strwythur, ymddygiad, methiant, iteriad a darganfyddiad. A dyna’r pwynt.”

Our BSc student Peter Smedley’s building primer task involved constructing a piece of furniture to fit within a site in the Preseli Hills in South Wales.

His project focuses on the key ideas of minimising impact to the ground around the furniture piece, using sustainable materials and building practices, and reflecting the topography of the surrounding area. These ideas are tied together to form a chaise lounge which reclines with the land, as a gentle intervention in rugged topography, with the aim of melding the human experience with the natural environment.

Da iawn / Well done Peter!

Tasg adeiladu cyntaf ein myfyriwr BSc Peter Smedley oedd creu darn o ddodrefn i gyd-fynd â safle ym Mynyddoedd y Preseli yn ne Cymru.

Mae ei brosiect yn canolbwyntio ar y syniadau allweddol o leihau’r effaith ar y ddaear o amgylch y darn o ddodrefn, gan ddefnyddio deunyddiau ac arferion adeiladu cynaliadwy ac adlewyrchu tirwedd yr ardal gyfagos. Mae’r syniadau hyn yn dod at ei gilydd i ffurfio chaise lounge sy’n dilyn gogwydd y tir ac yn dod yn rhan o’r dirwedd garw, gyda’r nod o gysylltu pobl â’r amgylchedd naturiol.

As part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2025 our public exhibition: ‘Places for work we want to work in’ traces the evolution of workspace design through multiple perspectives, insights from the DEGW archive, recent academic research and MArch-2 design studio teaching led by Dr Yasser Megahed and Dr Hiral Patel.

We aim to prompt reflection on how the design of workplaces might evolve to support intergenerational exchange, lifelong learning and social contribution, and more importantly how can the conversation of workplace futures evolve going forward.

Fel rhan o Ŵyl Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol ESRC 2025 mae ein harddangosfa gyhoeddus: ‘Mannau gwaith yr ydym am weithio ynddynt’ yn olrhain yr esblygiad o ddylunio mannau gwaith trwy safbwyntiau lluosog, mewnwelediadau o archif DEGW, ymchwil academaidd ddiweddar ac addysgu stiwdio ddylunio MArch-2 o dan arweiniad Dr Yasser Megahed a Dr Hiral Patel.

Ein nôd yw ysgogi myfyrdod ar sut y gallai dyluniad gweithleoedd esblygu i gefnogi cyfnewid rhyng-genhedlaeth, dysgu gydol oes, a chyfraniad cymdeithasol, ac yn bwysicach fyth sut y gall y sgwrs am ddyfodol gweithleoedd esblygu wrth inni fynd yn ein blaen.

On we’re sharing our student work currently featured in

This year’s theme is and calls on architects to embrace approaches that reinforce the ability of the built environment to withstand, adapt, and be rebuilt. Architecture should do more than provide shelter; it must also support equity, continuity, and resilience, especially in times of disruption and crisis.

___

Ar rydyn ni’n rhannu gwaith ein myfyrwyr sy’n ymddangos ar hyn o bryd yn .

Thema eleni yw , ac mae’n galw ar benseiri i wneud y mwyaf o ddulliau sy’n atgyfnerthu gallu’r amgylchedd adeiledig i wrthsefyll, addasu, a chael ei ailadeiladu. Dylai pensaernïaeth wneud mwy na darparu lloches yn unig; rhaid iddi hefyd gefnogi ecwiti, parhad a gwydnwch, yn enwedig ar adegau o aflonyddwch ac argyfwng.
