Ar Diwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywod, hoffem eich cyflwyno i un arall o enillwyr poster Cynhadledd Sefydliad Catalysis Caerdydd 2026, Taylor Wilde!

Mae ei hymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar syntheseiddio cymhlygion asid Lewis newydd o Grŵp 13 er mwyn actifadu a throsi CO₂, gan helpu gwyddonwyr i ddeall yn well sut y gellir dal a defnyddio carbon deuocsid yn fwy effeithiol. Mae’r canlyniadau cynnar yn addawol, gyda un o’r cymhlygion newydd eisoes yn dangos arwyddion cadarnhaol o actifadu CO₂.

Roedd ennill gwobr y poster yn foment arbennig i Taylor. Dywedodd: "Mae’n gwneud i mi deimlo bod fy ngwaith yn cael ei gydnabod, ac mae’n gyffrous gweld diddordeb parhaus mewn cemeg anorganig homogenaidd synthetig. Mae synthesis yn offeryn pwerus sy’n ein galluogi i ddeall hanfodion cemeg yn wirioneddol."

Wrth edrych ymlaen at 2026 ac ymlaen, mae Taylor yn gobeithio parhau i ddatblygu cymhlygion sefydlog ond adweithiol ar gyfer sefydlogi CO₂, gan fwynhau ei thaith PhD ar hyd y ffordd.

O ran ysbrydoliaeth, dywedodd Taylor fod y menywod yn ei bywyd yn chwarae rôl bwysig: "Rwy’n edmygu’r holl fenywod anhygoel o’m cwmpas. Rwy’n cael fy ysbrydoli gan fy ffrindiau a’m teulu bob dydd — ac yn enwedig gan fy mam, am yr holl gefnogaeth a’r cariad y mae hi wedi’i roi i mi.”

On , we'd like to introduce you to another of our CCI Conference 2025 poster winners, Taylor Wilde!

Her research focuses on synthesising new Group 13 Lewis acid complexes to activate and convert CO₂, helping scientists better understand how we might capture and utilise carbon dioxide more effectively. Early results are promising, with one of the newly synthesised complexes already showing positive signs of CO₂ activation.

Winning the poster prize was a special moment for Taylor:
“It makes me feel like my work is being validated, and it’s exciting to see continued interest in synthetic homogeneous inorganic chemistry. Synthesis is a powerful tool that helps us truly understand the fundamentals of chemistry.”

Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, Taylor hopes to continue developing stable yet reactive complexes for CO₂ fixation and enjoy her PhD journey along the way.

When it comes to inspiration,Taylor shared that the women in her life play a huge role: “I really look up to all the amazing women around me. I’m inspired by my friends and family every day — and especially my mum, for all the support and love she’s given me.”

Ar y Diwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywod hwn rydym yn dathlu gwaith Jennifer Edwards yn , y mae ei hymchwil yn helpu i lywio safonau byd-eang ar gyfer cynhyrchion mislif.

Yn Ddarllenydd mewn Cemeg Ffisegol yn Sefydliad Catalysis Caerdydd, mae Dr Edwards wedi arwain datblygiad cynnyrch mislif hunan-lanhau sy’n gallu lladd hyd at 99.999% o facteria pan fydd yn agored i olau’r haul.

Mae tîm o wyddonwyr o Gaerdydd bellach yn gweithio gyda chydweithwyr yn Nepal Academy of Science and Technology i addasu technoleg SunPad er mwyn helpu i lanhau cyflenwadau dŵr mewn cymunedau megis Dyffryn Kathmandu, lle mae hyd at 70% o’r ffynonellau dŵr wedi’u halogi gan bathogenau a gludir gan ddŵr.

Dywedodd Dr Edwards:
“Mae’n gyffrous iawn gweld y dechnoleg a arweiniodd at ein cynhyrchion mislif hunan-lanhau yn cael ei defnyddio mewn astudiaethau maes yn Nepal, ac eisoes yn dod o hyd i gymwysiadau newydd yn y wlad.”

This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the work of Professor Jennifer Edwards at , whose research is helping shape global standards for menstrual products.

A Reader in Physical Chemistry at the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, Dr Edwards has led the development of a self-cleaning period product that can kill up to 99.999% of bacteria when exposed to sunlight.

Cardiff's team of scientists are now working together with researchers at the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) to adapt SunPad’s technology to clean water supplies in communities like the Kathmandu Valley, where up to 70% of sources are contaminated with waterborne pathogens.

Dr Jennifer Edwards, a Reader in Cardiff University’s School of Chemistry, said: “It’s really exciting to see the technology that has led our self-cleaning period products to field studies in Nepal, already finding new applications in the country.”

Y hwn rydym yn dathlu llwyddiannau Rebecca Melen, Athro Cemeg Anorganig yn .

Mae ei phrosiect arloesol RadicalCAT yn archwilio sut y gall catalysis di-fetel greu llwybrau glanach a mwy cynaliadwy i gynhyrchu cynhyrchion fferyllol.

Fel y dywedodd yr Athro Melen: Am ddegawdau, mae metelau trosiannol wedi dominyddu catalysis. Ac yn gwbl briodol – maent yn bwerus, yn amlbwrpas ac yn hanfodol. Ond mae llawer ohonynt, yn enwedig y metelau gwerthfawr, yn ddrud, yn brin ac yn wenwynig… Felly’r cwestiwn y bydd prosiect RadicalCAT yn ei ofyn yw: beth petai metelau trosiannol ddim yr unig opsiwn i ni?

Gyda chefnogaeth Grant Cydgrynhoi’r Cyngor Ymchwil Ewropeaidd gwerth tua €2 miliwn, bydd y prosiect yn ymchwilio i adweithiau cemegol arloesol sy’n cael eu gyrru gan brosesau electrogemegol. Gyda dim ond 349 o brosiectau wedi’u hariannu o blith 3,121 o geisiadau, roedd y gystadleuaeth yn eithriadol o gystadleuol. Mae’r llwyddiant hwn yn dyst i wreiddioldeb a gwerth dull ymchwil yr Athro Melen.

Bydd RadicalCAT yn rhedeg am bum mlynedd, gan helpu i ddatblygu ffyrdd glanach a mwy effeithlon o gynhyrchu meddyginiaethau hanfodol.

This we’re celebrating the achievements of Rebecca Melen, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at .

Her pioneering RadicalCAT project is exploring how metal-free catalysis could create cleaner, more sustainable routes to pharmaceuticals.

As Professor Melen shared: For decades, transition metals have ruled catalysis. And rightly so, they are powerful, versatile, and essential. But many, especially the precious metals, are expensive, scarce, and toxic... So, the question the RadicalCAT project will ask is: what if transition metals weren’t our only option?

Supported by a prestigious European Research Council Consolidator Grant of around €2 million, the project will investigate innovative chemical reactions powered by electrochemistry. With only 349 projects funded from 3,121 applications, the competition was intense. This win is a testament to the originality and value of Professor Melen's approach.

RadicalCAT will run for five years, helping unlock cleaner, smarter ways to make vital medicines.

On International Women’s Day, I want to celebrate the outstanding achievements of women across our School of Chemistry. Over the past year, our students and staff have excelled at every level, from winning poster competitions to making significant contributions to the teaching and research culture of our School. These accomplishments reflect not only individual excellence but also the supportive and collaborative environment we continue to build together.

We are also proud to recognise our colleagues who have taken on national leadership roles, including Chair of a Royal Society of Chemistry Interest Group, as well as several who have received prestigious awards. Their successes highlight the strength, impact, and innovation of the women in our community. Dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, mae ein myfyrwyr a’n staff wedi rhagori ar bob lefel, o ennill cystadlaethau poster i wneud cyfraniadau sylweddol at ddiwylliant addysgu ac ymchwil yr Ysgol. Mae’r cyflawniadau hyn yn adlewyrchu nid yn unig ragoriaeth unigol, ond hefyd yr amgylchedd cefnogol a chydweithredol yr ydym yn parhau i’w feithrin gyda’n gilydd.

We are delighted to announce that Sir Richard Catlow has been awarded the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) David and Betty Hamburg Award for Science Diplomacy.

This is in recognition of Professor Catlow's international coalition-building efforts to support global scientific collaboration, his championing of early-career research scientists, and his fortitude in overcoming challenges and blockers to international progress in scientific research.
