Happy World Peatlands Day!🌱💚

We would like to shine a spotlight on the beautiful peatlands, bogs and mosses we are so lucky to have within our National Landscape.

Today we celebrate the vital services peatlands provide for us.

Healthy peatlands:

✨Store huge amounts of carbon
✨Support rare and unusual plants, birds, and insects
✨Help to reduce flood risks
✨Boost our health and wellbeing

Why not see for yourself? Take a moment to relax and immerse yourself in the peaceful setting of a peatland. Whether you walk, meditate or simply sit back and appreciate the nature surrounding you, there are so many ways you can enjoy this environment.

Here are a couple of our favourite wetland paradises for you to explore:

• Glasson Moss Nature Reserve
• Drumburgh Moss Nature Reserve
• RSPB Campfield Marsh Reserve

You can find out more information about these sites on our website https://www.solwaycoast-nl.org.uk/places-to-explore/

Many peatlands suffered badly from peat extraction for the horticultural industry but here on the Solway Coast we have seen successful restoration projects take place. For example, Glasson Moss, which is now recovering well and offers the opportunity to experience one of the best examples of a healthy, wet, growing bog on the Solway Coast. 💧🌱🦋🦎

Many thanks to our graduating students, families & friends for joining us for the film screening & exhibition event on Friday which showcased your creativity & talent.

The exhibition in our Studio Gallery & rolling film screening in Lecture Room 3 are now open every day until our Open Day this Saturday 6th June, with deinstallation from Monday 8th June.

Jonny Becker Photography took some lovely portraits at the opening event on Friday, capturing some of our students - notably lots of our students prefer to be behind the camera & not in front of it - being as elusive as some of the wildlife they photograph 😆. Maybe camouflage clothing & camera traps are needed next time!

We are very grateful to Dawn McCall, graduating BA Wildlife Media student, for her creativity and hard work designing an amazing new interpretation panel for our campus wildlife area. It is an absolutely stunning panel of biodiversity information and will support students, staff and the wider community in protecting and conserving the campus habitats and species.

What a great legacy to leave us with Dawn - in recognition of this your course team have nominated you for Graduation Prizes in the 'Community Engagement' and 'Personal Achievement' categories - to reflect our regard for your contribution leading The Wildlife Society and its diverse activities which benefit our entire community.

These prizes are decided by a senior management panel and open to all students across all courses at the University and are yet to be decided - but we wish to say publicly that we are very impressed with your achievements Dawn and consider your work at the level required for a nomination.
