University of Cumbria - Psychology

University of Cumbria - Psychology A community for Applied Psychology students and staff at the University of Cumbria. Central to the study of psychology is a fascination with human behaviour.

The psychology team come from a range of psychology backgrounds bringing with them a wealth of expertise from clinical, organisational, community, health and forensic settings. Applied psychology takes this interest further and looks at how our understanding of human behaviour can be used to affect change in the real world. Applied psychologists investigate questions that are of profound relevance

to social policy and therefore peoplesโ€™ lives; for example: Does stress in the workplace really reduce your life expectancy? Is community punishment more effective than prison? The degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society as conferring eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) on achievement of a 2:2 or above. The Psychology team is able to draw upon colleagues from the complimentary disciplines of Law, Policing and Criminology and Social Sciences and continues to develop a range of opportunities that capture this breadth of knowledge and experience.

Request for research participants exploring social media, loneliness and social connection!

Hello,

My name is Robert Mulgrew and I am an undergraduate psychology student at the University of Cumbria. I am conducting research exploring the impact of various forms of social media use on perceived loneliness and social connectedness. The research aims to expand on previous literature assessing the impact of social media by examining the interplay between four types of social media use - image-based, comparison-based, belief- based and consumption-based use of social media with loneliness and social connections.

Your participation will involve completing an online survey, answering questions relating to your use of social media, your experience of loneliness and how you are connected to others.

To participate, you must be 18 years or older and be an active user of at least one social media application. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes and will only need to be completed once.

If you are interested, please follow the survey link below:

If you have any questions regarding the study, please contact me on: [email protected]

Our fabulous Kirsty has had a very busy week!

This week the A Level Psychology students, along with the A Level Sociology students in both Year 12 and 13 were given the opportunity to attend a Research Methods Master Class from the University of Cumbria . Research Methods topics are critical for both subjects, as it is the underlying methodology for analysing the validity and reliability of any data generated from a scientific study. We were so grateful that Kirsty Martin, a Teaching Associate from the Psychology faculty at the University, was able to come into school to share her expertise in this area. Groups were provided with key theory relating to experimental design, as well as being able to complete some practical experiments to apply theories learned. Huge thanks to Kirsty and the UoC Psychology faculty for making this possible.
