At a special online event this month, UWTSD launched a series of resources that will help Welsh-medium sports students undertake and conduct health and fitness tests.
Funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol these resources were developed by Geraint Forster, Senior Lecturer in Sport Science and Exercise and Canolfan Peniarth. The resources are of use to students studying Physical Education, Sports Therapy, Sport Science and Exercise, Sport Performance Analysis, Sport Coaching and Conditioning, Sports Recovery and Massage across Welsh Universities as well as students studying Sport as a subject in Further Education Colleges and Schools.
A series of film clips containing 10 health and fitness test guides have been developed using a combination of graphic designs and infographics to produce the film and sound clips to effectively communicate the main features of the tests to the practitioner.
Geraint Forster, Senior Lecturer in Sport Science and Exercise at UWTSD, said:
“We are very grateful to the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for supporting this project and Canolfan Peniarth for the digital expertise.
The intention is to equip students with quality resources designed and developed to support student studies. As there is no such resource available in Welsh, we hope to ensure students' confidence in dealing with the subject in Welsh which will enable them to deal with clients in the world of work.
Conducting health and fitness tests is an integral part of learning and development in these areas to ensure the ability to highlight clients' strengths and weaknesses, evaluate exercise programs, create benchmarks for competition / monitoring, assist goal setting and promote adherence in rehearsal, identify components that can limit performance and provide feedback for performers - skills that students need to develop confidently in both languages in order to deal with the public at a high standard in the world of work.”
According to Ffion Hughes, Sciences Development Officer at the Coleg Cymraeg:
“In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in the number of students studying Sport through the medium of Welsh in Wales. We are pleased to support the development of a resource that will be useful for their studies and equip them to use their bilingual skills in the workplace.”
These resources are of use to students across Welsh Universities as well as students studying Sport as a subject in Further Education Colleges and Schools.
