On our diploma programme, Professor Dylan Wiliam led a seminar on research in education. As Joe Toko put it, there's no one better than Dylan Wiliam to introduce and help you navigate this topic!

If you're new to thinking about research in education - in a research profession, you would make most decisions based on the evidence available, because you know that this action is more likely to lead to a better outcome. This isn't the case in education, however. As Dylan puts it: "what works is rarely the right question. everything works somewhere, nothing works everywhere. A better question is, under what conditions does this work?"

As we look forward to welcoming Professor Dylan Wiliam to our diploma programme in a few weeks, we're sharing a link to part 1 of his BBC documentary from 2010, The Classroom Experiment.

Dylan got the chance to put some techniques into practice, comparing the outcomes for one form against the rest of the year group. It's fascinating to see how the experiments changed the dynamics of the class and how the teachers received them too. What do you think?

This term is all about "evaluating learning" for our diploma in education & training students. At a recent seminar led by Andy Griffith, he shared with our students some thoughts around why there might be gaps between your teaching and your students' learning.

Research from Dylan Wiliam revealed 54% of teachers said they had a great relationship with their students, but only 34% of students said they had a great relationship with their teachers.

To dig deeper into this and other perception gaps, Andy talked about how we sometimes experience self-enhancement (thinking we're better than average - a normal phenomenon described as the Dunning-Kruger effect), underestimating our performance (focussing on our limitations and not our strengths) and underestimating our potential (believing we have limits that mean we can't develop).

Here's 3 of the 10 tips Andy shared with us to close these perception gaps:

💡Video is a great way of revealing some hidden blind spots in our teaching.
💡Questioning and student surveys can help you find out how your students are receiving what you're teaching.
💡Digging into data with qualitative and quantitative information gives you a broader understanding of how to develop your teaching practice.

How do you evaluate your teaching?

As we look forward to welcoming eminent Professor Dylan Wiliam to our diploma programme in June, we've been catching up with his interview with UK based education authors Tom Sherrington and Emma Turner on their podcast Mind the Gap: Making Education Work Across the Globe.

Among other topics, Wiliam explains why he still believes cognitive load theory is so important for teachers to understand. It's counterintuitive "that students can independently complete an instructional task, unaided, and yet not remember...any of what that task was designed to teach them two weeks later." Cognitive load theory provides an explanation for this - the students' cognitive resources "were deployed on solving the problem...and there were no cognitive resources left for long term memory."

For this episode, special guest Dylan Wiliam joins hosts Tom Sherrington and Emma Turner to discuss good teaching practices, theories of student learning, an...

This week, Amy Matthews led a session on working with children with challenging behaviours, social and emotional needs and kicked off by sharing some tips for self-care. It's often easier said than done, but we need to make sure we're as resilient as possible in order to support the children we're working with.

1. Look after your voice if it's something you struggle with. Drink lots of water, and don't talk when you don't need to.
2. Make time everyday for something you enjoy (Amy likes listening to podcasts in the mornings to put her in a good frame of mind).
3. Eat well and take a healthy lunch into work if you can.
4. Get as much sleep as you can.
5. Put time in your diary for you. It's not just the time you might spend doing something relaxing, but the time leading up to it that you're looking forward to it as well.

We hope you have a good run up to the Easter break, and share with us any other top tips you have for improving your resilience at work ❤️

We get *really* excited about tools that enhance teaching. This month our team have been checking out Classpoint.io - it integrates seemlessly with MS Powerpoint and enables you to make your class presentations more interactive and engaging. The random name picker is really fun! And the quizzes are particularly useful. Check it out and let us know if you think you'll use it in your teaching.

(And no, we haven't been paid to promote this, we just really like it!)
