New UoC Conservation and Nature Society!

They are a society formed by students at UoC with the shared goal of making the university campuses and the surrounding areas better and safer places for all different types of wildlife 🦔🦊🐞🦆

As a society, they aim to run events and work with other societies at the university. These events include but are not limited to:

🚶‍♂️nature/ID walks
🗑️litter picking
🎲nature themed bingo & game nights

Recently, the white-faced darter research team at UoC had a highly successful field visit, surveying 9 different pools to take habitat measurements and sample individuals. Highlight of the day was finding white-faced darter larvae! 🐛

We are incredibly proud to announce one of our students, Holly Buxton has won the British and Irish Society of Animal Science (BSAS) Undergraduate Thesis of the Year Award. This award recognises outstanding research and celebrates the talent, dedication and contribution of the next generation of animal scientists.

Holly who has completed BSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare has gone on to study Animal Behaviour MSc at the University of Chester. Is a credit to the School of Natural Sciences and we are happy to celebrate her successes.

On her course Holly has said:
"I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Animal Behaviour and Welfare at the University of Chester as it has given me the opportunity to learn about something I am genuinely passionate about. This course has allowed me to develop my understanding of animal behaviour and welfare and gain many valuable skills that I will carry forward with me. I have found the degree highly rewarding, with interesting modules and lecturers that are always happy to help. It has also provided me with some incredible opportunities, such as a conservation field trip to South Africa and carrying out my own research on a topic that I am especially passionate about. I am grateful to have won the British Society of Animal Science Undergraduate Thesis of the Year Award following nomination by the university. I won the award for my dissertation titled “The Impact of Visitor Numbers and Ambient Noise levels on Affiliative and Agonistic Interactions in Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes spp.) at Chester Zoo”. I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend and present my research at the BISAS annual conference in Dundee in April 2027. I also look forward to continuing my studies at the University of Chester, having just started my Master’s degree in Animal Behaviour."

Our University Experience Week next week is the perfect opportunity to get a taster of our courses and work out which course is the right choice! The School of Natural Sciences are offering two sessions for you to book on to on Wednesday 28th October:

🪳 Insects: Are bigger cockroaches faster, and are the boldest always first off the mark?
In this hands-on practical, weigh live cockroaches and time their dash towards a shelter. Compare your results to explore how body size relates to running speed, and consider how boldness and willingness to move might influence their performance.

🦴 Bones: How much force does it take to break a bone?
Put rat and chicken limb bones to the test in this hands-on practical. Gradually increase the load until they snap, then compare your results to discover how bone size and structure help animals withstand the forces of everyday life.

It was a pleasure to share our research and discuss how independent projects can help prepare students for university and beyond 🎓
