Passionate about community engagement, we run a monthly public research seminar series with visiting scholars & activists. The Institute was established at the University of Chester in December 2015 to help create an exciting research hub for students and staff with teaching and research interests in Gender Studies. Led by its Director, Professor Emma Rees, the Institute aims to deliver engaging,

high-quality postgraduate teaching, as well as a number of exciting research seminars throughout the year. The members of the Institute reflect its interdisciplinary nature.

Our annual public research seminar series, celebrating a decade of the Institute of Gender Studies, continues this Thursday, 4th June!

We’re delighted to be joined this Pride Month by Dr Susie Bower-Brown (UCL) who’ll talk about her new ESRC-funded community-focused research project, ‘Family Beyond the Binary’, exploring non-binary people’s family experiences. Susie will reflect on her research with trans and non-binary parents, examining how they navigate parenting spaces and negotiate gender norms. THIS THURSDAY: the second event in our eighth annual public research seminar series! Our next online talk is open to everyone (you don’t need any kind of connection to the University to come along), and takes place on Thursday 29th February from 6:00pm-7:30pm (GMT).

In the run-up to the publication of the paperback edition of their groundbreaking SUNY (State University of New York Press) work, Italian Trans Geographies, the editors discuss trans activism, cultural identity, and national belonging. Join us for this exciting interdisciplinary, international event featuring Danila Cannamela (Colby College, Maine), Marzia Mauriello (Università di Napoli L’Orientale), and Summer Minerva (Independent Researcher & Performance Artist).

We're delighted to let you know that our eighth annual public research seminar series kicks off later this month!

Talks are all online (almost – March will be different) via Microsoft Teams. They’re open to everyone (you don’t need any kind of connection to the University to come along).

The first event, on Thursday 25th January, features the brilliant Heike Bauer, Professor of Modern Literature and Cultural History and Head of Research in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Birkbeck, University of London.

In ‘Cats, Dogs & Q***r Modernity’, Heike gives centre stage to the cats and dogs that populate the q***r past, taking as her starting point visual sources such as photographs of Wotan and Thorgils, the dachshunds of Radclyffe Hall and Una Troubridge. The presentation explores how attention to specific animals expands understanding of the early twentieth-century literary and artistic subcultures that have shaped our image of q***r modernity.

There are just a few days to go until the first event in our seventh annual research seminar series!

The latest publication from the Institute of Gender Studies is The Routledge Companion to Gender, Sexuality, and Culture. Come along to hear from some of the more than 40 contributors from around the world as they discuss why we need now, more than ever, to talk about gender and sexuality.

The seminar will be online via Microsoft Teams. It’s open to everyone (you don’t need any kind of connection to the University to come along): simply message to express your interest, and I’ll send you a link so that you can join us at 6pm (BST) on Thursday coming (20th October 2022).

We were incredibly lucky last week to have Professor Virginia Braun to speak live from Auckland as our research seminar guest. Over 100 people from around the world tuned in to hear her talk on her new book, written with Victoria Clarke. The evening was brilliantly hosted by IGS PhD student Gill Badrock.

There are just a few days to go until the third event in our 2021-22 research seminar series.

Dr Coco d’Hont, author of Extreme States: The Evolution of American Transgressive Fiction will speak online at 6pm on Thursday 16th December on:

‘How Female Is the Future? Unpacking Gender in Contemporary Metal Music’.

The evening will be hosted, and Dr d’Hont will be introduced, by IGS PhD student Holly Royle, a musician researching gender and genre in metal.
