🎉 Congratulations to recent Government PhD Nihad Aboud for her first solo publication!

Why do only some local Islamist organisations affiliate with global networks like al-Qaeda or the Islamic State? Fewer than a quarter of Islamist groups form such affiliations. Dr Aboud explores that question in her article "A Quest for Legitimacy: Drivers of Organizational Affiliation with Global Jihadist Networks," which was part of her dissertation.

The article argues that when militant groups lack local legitimacy, they try to substitute for it through transnational connections instead - affiliating with global networks. Analyses of 97 Islamist organizations find support for the argument.

Well done, Nihad!

Department of Government staff recently spent a day at Scotland Yard, the Metropolitan Police headquarters, discussing how our research can contribute to public safety - topics like predicting violence, understanding online threats, preventing violence against women and girls, and improving community-police relations.

Government joined a larger Social Science Faculty team, including colleagues from Department of Economics at Essex and Sociology and Criminology at the University of Essex. Essex staff have longstanding ties with Met Police colleagues, and it was great to make new connections as well. Essex is well-known for leading on security and public safety.

Research is a fundamental part of university life. We bring research into the classroom to help students learn, and we use it to contribute to important policy debates - trying to make the world a better place.

Government Department PhD student publishes in PLOS Climate! The Department consistently scores among the highest in the country for research quality, and our postgraduate researchers exemplify this.

PhD student James Rice's research "Beyond post-truth: Projecting the future trajectory of climate misinformation" is now available Open Access.

The article explores how delay and deflection narratives, generative AI, synthetic media, and geopolitical climate narratives may shape the next phase of climate misinformation. It has important implications for public trust, democratic debate, and effective climate action.

Congratulations, James!
