Introducing BabyLab at Home! A new series sharing simple, research-backed activities you can try with your baby to support early development.
This month's topic: Social Gaze 👀
Did you know babies are learning to communicate long before they say their first word? One of the most powerful tools they use is eye gaze.
The science
Research shows that babies prefer looking at faces that are looking directly at them, and they spend longer looking at faces with open eyes rather than closed eyes. These early face-to-face interactions help babies learn about communication, emotions, and language development.
Here are some simple ways to encourage social gaze at home ⬇️
👶 Face-to-face play
Get down to your baby’s level during playtime to make eye contact easier.
🗣️ Talk, sing & share a book together
Babies are more likely to look at your face when you speak. Singing songs, chatting during feeds, or sharing books together all help support these early interactions 💛
📵 Minimise distractions
Phones and screens can compete for attention during important face-to-face moments. Even a few uninterrupted minutes together can give your baby rich opportunities to connect and learn.
✨ Small everyday interactions can support big developmental changes.
💬 Have you noticed your baby watching your face when you talk or sing? We'd love to hear your favourite ways to connect with your little one.
