⭐️ Professor Georgia Kremmyda appointed Chair of new QAA Subject Benchmark Statement

Professor Georgia Kremmyda has been appointed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) as Chair of the new Subject Benchmark Statement for Disasters, Risks and Humanitarian Studies, as part of the 2026–27 Subject Benchmark Statement reviews.

Subject Benchmark Statements play a significant role across UK higher education, supporting the design, delivery and review of academic programmes and articulating what students can reasonably be expected to know, understand and be able to do by the end of their studies.

As Chair, Georgia will work with the Deputy Chairs, Professor Stuart Gordon (London School of Economics and Political Science) and Professor Joanna Faure Walker (University College London), and an Advisory Group from across the UK higher education sector to develop the Statement. The work will consider the breadth and evolving nature of the field and its connections across disciplines, helping to establish a framework that can support the design, delivery and review of academic programmes across UK higher education.

Congratulations to Georgia on this new role!

The QAA is currently seeking members for the Advisory Group, providing an opportunity for colleagues working in Disasters, Risks, Humanitarian Studies and related disciplines to contribute to the development of this new national framework.

Applications to join the Advisory Group close on 25 September 2026.

🏎️ Meet Driven by Her 💜

Women from teams across the UK are coming together through Driven by Her, a new network set up by Warwick Engineering students which aims to connect, support and celebrate women in the Formula Student community.

Recently, the network hosted Carchella, an event held in collaboration with Formula Student UK to raise awareness of Driven by Her and connect with women across the paddock – as well as industry professionals.

From specially made survival kits containing paddock essentials 🩹🎀 to custom mirrors, bracelet-making, stickers and plenty of opportunities to chat and connect, Carchella was a huge success!

The event has helped Driven by Her reach more women across the Formula Student community as it works towards its goal of becoming a core community for women in Formula Student across the UK.

“A winning mentality should be in your head. Always know that you're a winner, and you can do everything. Period.”

Chasing your dream of starting a business can be hard, but our alumni speaker this afternoon, Sanzhar Taizhan (BEng Automotive Engineering, 2020), doesn’t think that should dissuade you.

Providing some fantastic advice - especially for anyone looking to launch their own company - Sanzhar stressed the importance of being guided by your soul, highlighted the need for sacrifice, and challenged our new graduates to solve industry problems in a unique fashion, rather than repeating what has come before.
