This series is in complement to the IFR4NPO Consultation paper which was launched on the 28th January 2021. This paper examines 14 accounting and reporting issues specific to the nonprofit sector. As such, the IFR4NPO is engaging stakeholders to further understand the issues that are important to the sector.

NPO web-based accountability: How can we know if NPOs are doing good things?

The Australian Nonprofit Accounting Standards Research Program, supported by the Institute of Community Directors, is pleased to present this seminar as part of our Nonprofit Accounting Standards Seminar Series.

The seminar’s discussions will be led by Dr Vien Chu, lecturer in accounting at the Newcastle Business School, University of Newcastle. Prior to joining academia, Vien acquired eight years of private sector accounting experience.

Web-based disclosure and dialogue has become increasingly important for enhancing the accountability of not-for-profit organisations (NPOs). This presentation will examine the results of a research program focused on the web-based disclosures of 165 NPOs.

Findings highlight NPOs’ web-based accountability assessing operational disclosure, promoting NPOs’ activities and mission. In terms of findings, financial and social performance disclosure were lacking, despite financial performance being publicly available on the government regulator’s website.

While NPOs have increased channels facilitating dialogue, meaningful discussions on NPOs’ performance are still missing. The study suggests that regulatory requirements play an important role in strengthening

Accountability and the Rule of Law Workshop

The Accountability Round Table (ART) and Deakin University will be hosting a thought-provoking workshop set to examine accountability and Rule of Law.

Government Accountability and the Rule of Law are two fundamental features of liberal democracy. ART aims to strengthen Australia’s liberal democracy by promoting the rule of law and its effectiveness through accountability for government decisions and actions. This event will explore the real meaning of “Rule of Law”.

Host: Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin

Speakers: Shadow Minister for Government Accountability, Senator the Hon Kristina Keneally and Liberal Party representative (to be confirmed).

When: 6.15pm (AEST) Wednesday 21st July 2021
