🌟 Alumni Helen says that her time studying at the University of Derby was 'filled with friendship, connection and a sense of belonging.'

Now working as an education consultant and author, she recalls fondly the field trips - in particular a visit to Morocco - that helped to deepen her passion for geography.

What stood out most was the feeling that there was always someone nearby to share experiences with.

Helen said: "I loved the feel on campus - there was always someone I knew to hang out with. I also made great friends, who I'm still in contact with 30 years later."

Our third-year Zoology and Environmental Sciences and Sustainability students have been working on a live brief project at St George's Park - home of England's national men's women's and para football teams ⚽

As part of their module on Ecological Consultancy, UK habitat surveys were created to monitor and learn more about protected species in the area such as bats and badgers.

πŸ¦‡ Student David Edwards said: "Bat surveys were conducted using bat acoustic monitoring at dusk after identifying potential roosting spots.

"A badger survey was also conducted where we found strong evidence of badger activity such as well used belly paths and lots of snuffle holes.

"The module overall provided great first-hand experience of working withing Ecological Consultancy which is the career path I would like to take in the not-so-distant future."

Great work everyone πŸ‘

It has been a good season for Derby County on the pitch, and a fantastic one for our students, who have benefitted from our partnership with the football club 🀝⚽

Sport Management students Harvey Mawbey and Charlie Bingham have successfully completed 30 hours of work experience with the Rams, while those on our Football Journalism course got the chance recently to interview Academy players.

🐏 Harvey, who is in his second year, said: "This experience gave me valuable behind-the-scenes insight into matchday operations, including stewarding and safety procedures in the stands, as well as time spent in the match control box.

"It was fascinating to see how much coordination and planning goes into ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for both home and away supporters.

Charlie added: "From the Rams Family Area to supporting wider event logistics, every game has taught me something new."

Our Biology and Zoology students recently travelled to Tenerife for an unforgettable field trip packed with hands-on learning and research opportunities ✈️🌍

Students explored coastal geology on hikes, visited the snowy landscapes of Mount Teide, and discovered how native wildlife (including lizards! 🦎) has shaped the island’s environment.

Zoology student Lily Rose Coxon said: "I had so many amazing opportunities to dive deeper into subjects I don’t usually focus on.

"I also got to conduct a unique research project on the impact of abiotic factors on overall rockpool diversity, including species richness and abundance."

Trips like this give our students the chance to apply their learning, build research skills and experience Biology beyond the classroom πŸ₯Ό
