Have you ever heard the claim that Freemasonry is all about secrets?
Do you want to know the truth?
Well, strap in then, as we can tell you the truth!
In truth, the “secretive” aspects are only a very small part of Freemasonry, but they're also very important.
The truth is, yes, Freemasons do have a few quirks and traditions that we share only with members. One such example is the well-known “secret handshake.” This is actually just a special grip used only during certain formal Masonic events, and it’s one of several unique customs of Freemasonry.
But do you want to know the real Masonic secret behind the handshake?
The “secretive” aspect of the handshake isn’t actually about the handshake itself, because knowing the handshake is absolutely pointless to anyone who isn’t a Freemason. So what’s the point of keeping the handshake a secret?
Well, in truth, it’s purely a test of a man's character.
The primary focus of Freemasonry is to develop trustworthy, honest men who keep their word and fulfil their responsibilities. Keeping the handshake a secret shows that the person can be trusted.
Our community considers moral integrity and ethical conduct essential behaviours that every man should do his utmost to uphold. Because, despite the world continuously changing around us, the demand for honest and trustworthy men who believe in practising the principles of integrity, friendship, respect, and service remains.
That’s why we, as Freemasons, place these four principles at the heart of everything we do, and that's why we have a “Secret Handshake.” Freemasons who can keep the handshake secret have proven they are honest and trustworthy men, and in today's world, that's more important than ever.
So next time you see a video on the internet or a documentary about someone claiming to have been a Freemason, and this person says they can “tell you the secrets of Freemasonry.” Just switch it off, because you can be sure they’re a dishonest, untrustworthy person who lacks the integrity even to keep their word. The chances are they’re either making it up to try to sell you something, or they’re upset at being found out to be crooks and have an axe to grind with Freemasonry. Either way, it’s not worth your time, or energy.
So, that’s the real truth: there aren’t actually any secrets in Freemasonry because, due to the many untrustworthy men who have failed that test over the years, all the “secret” information is out there. You could probably find all of it using a search engine right now, if you were so inclined.
But if I were you, I'd reconsider before you do that.
Because I can assure you that if you Google it, you're missing the point entirely and selling yourself short. It's much more interesting and fun to join, become a Freemason, and discover everything firsthand, then keep it a "secret.”
The journey of becoming a Freemason and living life as an honest man will ultimately make you a much better person. 🤐
