Missing out on timely stroke treatment has had a devastating effect on Graham’s life.

Thrombectomy, a treatment for stroke patients whose condition is caused by a blocked brain vessel, can transform patient outcomes. However many patients, like Graham, never receive it.

Dundee can help – our world-leading experts say training cross-specialty teams could change that, and are calling for an expanded approach to teaching.

We’re set to run the UK’s first trial exploring a new way of delivering an existing immunotherapy drug to cancer patients.

Our experts will work with oesophageal and gastric cancer patients taking part in the trial to test the effectiveness of a simple injection of a treatment that is usually delivered via an intravenous drip in hospital.

If successful, it's hoped immunotherapy could become a quicker process, delivered away from hospital. In time, it may even be administered at home by patients themselves, similar to how some people with diabetes manage their treatment. This work is in collaboration with BeOne Medicines.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Dean of Medicine, Professor Peter Howie.

Peter was one of Scotland's most distinguished and highly respected clinicians, credited for creating the slogan “Help Dennis Beat the Menace” for the Ninewells Cancer Campaign, which has raised millions of pounds for research and treatment.

He was elected as Dean in 1990 of what was then the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and had a major role in driving the direction of the medical school. He was instrumental in establishing the Medical Research Institute and also helped review the medical curriculum.

Experts from the University of Dundee are calling for dietary fibre to be officially recognised as an 'essential nutrient'

Their research, published in Nature Food, highlights fibre’s role in preventing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer - yet just 4% of UK adults hit recommended daily intake.

🗣️ John Cummings, Emeritus Professor of Experimental Gastroenterology at Dundee’s Faculty of Health: “While everyone knows that fibre is good for us, its importance is often overlooked.”

Fibre would be the first ‘new’ essential nutrient to be internationally recognised in more than 50 years - and would sit alongside nutrients already considered essential for humans, such as certain amino acids and vitamins.

A lifelong diabetes patient has spoken of how My Diabetes My Way (MDMW) has helped her take responsibility for her health as the University of Dundee-developed app celebrates a milestone anniversary.

Lindsey Hoggan said, 'It used to be the case that you would get blood tests done then you wouldn’t hear anything until your next appointment but with the app you have all your results at your fingertips.'

MDMW was developed by Drs Scott Cunningham and Debbie Wake and, over the past 15 years, has been shown to have the potential to save the health services millions of pounds every year while improving the quality of life of those who use it.
