Hild Bede Alumni

20/10/2026

You are invited to the unveiling of our St Hild Monument in the college grounds on Tuesday 17 November (St Hild's Day). The unveiling will be carried out by our great friend Lilian Groves.

The ceremony, which will include a blessing of the monument by our Chaplain Marie Edwards, will begin at 11.00am, so please be there by 10.45. Our Principal Prof Simon Forrest will also be in attendance. All current students of the college are being invited. After the unveiling ceremony, refreshments will be served in college.

As most of you know, this is a project the SCR have been working on for about five years, and has been financed by SCR members and a number of other benefactors. The moment was designed by Claudia Ashley-Brown, who will be at the unveiling, and was made by Scott’s Memorials of Seaham. It is made from black granite to emulate Whitby jet, and will be positioned so that it is facing Whitby.

The position of the monument is marked with a cross on the attached aerial view. If you are coming by car, please bear in mind that parking spaces are limited, and we cannot guarantee parking on site. There is, however, plenty of (paid) onroad parking in the streets around college. The address of the college is Rushford Court, North Road, Durham. For satnav purposes you should use the postcode DH1 4RY.

We hope to see you there!

Dear all,

We have an update on the Hild Bede site from Principal, Simon Forrest.

Dear hild Bede alumni,
As you know, your College has been working within a University Programme to deliver the vision of a refurbished College of St. Hild and St. Bede and regenerate the wider Leazes Road site. This will help us meet an aspiration to provide students with great accommodation and College experience, as well as deliver further residential accommodation to lessen the burden on the wider City’s residential market.
Unfortunately, given the incredibly challenging cost and nature of construction projects at present, and despite the best efforts of all involved, it has not been possible to take forward the current scheme with our preferred bidder.

The University has therefore taken the difficult decision to halt the procurement and bring the project to a controlled stop whilst we consider wider options. This is clearly the right decision for College, allowing us to commit energy to the future development of the project.

We are disappointed and understand that you may be too. We have learnt a lot throughout the process and we are now working towards finding the best outcome for your College. We are part of the consideration of the necessary next steps to deliver a sympathetic redevelopment of the wider Leazes Road site.
In the meantime, I want you to know that you have my continued commitment to do all I can to enable College to thrive, to treasure your experiences and support and translate that into brilliant opportunities for our current and future students.

I will continue to keep you updated as plans progress.

Best wishes,
Simon
