What lies beneath Antarctica’s ice? 🧊

An international team involving Dr Guy Paxman from our Department of Geography and led by Università di Genova has identified a vast, fan-shaped geological formation beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet.

The continental-scale structure, hidden under ice over 3km thick in places, reshapes understanding of Antarctica’s geological past and helps explain how the ice sheet behaves today.

Astronaut Rosemary Coogan, comedian Nick Mohammed, folk duo Rachel and Becky Unthank, chemist Professor David Parker FRS, Diplomat Jon Wilks CMG, historian Professor Paul Kennedy CBE, communications specialist Ross Forbes and robemaker Marni Myers will be honoured during our Summer Congregation ceremonies this July at Durham Cathedral.

Researchers from our Geography Department have uncovered new insights into how meltwater drains through cracks in the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Using satellite imagery and AI, the team found that seasonal glacier movement plays a key role in when water drains deep into the ice — an important discovery for understanding future sea level rise and climate change impacts.
