Dr Amanda Hsieh, Durham Music Department , Dr Ludovico Rella, Geography, and Dr Filip Szczypiński, Chemistry, have each been awarded European Research Council Starting Grants worth a combined £4.2m.

Projects will look at Imperial Japan’s history and impact on the Pacific through music, the hidden world of AI hardware, and uncovering the secrets of molecular behaviour with robotic chemistry and AI.

ERC Starting Grants are awarded to talented early-career researchers who have already produced excellent work, are ready to work independently, and show potential to be research leaders.
