A partnership between Archaeology at Durham University, our Oriental Museum and the Varendra Research Museum in Bangladesh is helping safeguard important collections and stories for future generations.

Through specialist training, digitisation projects, disaster planning and community engagement, the collaboration is strengthening the protection of cultural heritage while bringing communities closer to their history.

Dr Amanda Hsieh, Durham Music Department , Dr Ludovico Rella, Geography, and Dr Filip Szczypiński, Chemistry, have each been awarded European Research Council Starting Grants worth a combined £4.2m.

Projects will look at Imperial Japan’s history and impact on the Pacific through music, the hidden world of AI hardware, and uncovering the secrets of molecular behaviour with robotic chemistry and AI.

ERC Starting Grants are awarded to talented early-career researchers who have already produced excellent work, are ready to work independently, and show potential to be research leaders.

Dr Jack Symes from our Philosophy Department delivered a lecture at Harvard Divinity School in April on the topic of multiverse pantheism.

In the lecture, he discussed the arguments of the New Atheists, some of the central problems of philosophy, his own philosophical journey, and the key motivations for pantheism.

Our geographers have used freely available satellite radar images to track emperor penguins in polar winter for the first time 🐧
