Looking for your next great read? Or a fresh way into the classics? 🧐

For the National Year of Reading 2026, we’re asking our academics what they recommend as a “good read” and what inspires their teaching.

Kate Ash-Irisarri, Lecturer in Late Medieval Scottish & English Literature, shares the texts that get students talking (including Pearl and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight), the books she loves re-reading (from The Dark is Rising to The Worst Witch), plus a top ten that runs from Beowulf to The Princess Bride.

An irreversible shift in the chemical make-up of the Arctic Ocean driven by climate change is disrupting the region’s food chain, a study suggests.

Widespread loss of Arctic sea ice has led to a sharp fall in levels of a key nutrient, affecting populations of plankton, fish, seabirds and marine mammals, researchers say.

University experts are contributing to a UK collaboration to study the zoonotic infection Andes hantavirus, following an outbreak of disease on the cruise ship MV Hondius.

The team will seek to aid understanding of the virus, which is associated with hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), a severe and potentially fatal illness.

Researchers aim to characterise clinical features and disease progression, and identify risk factors for severe outcomes. They will also seek to understand transmission dynamics, including evidence for human‑to‑human spread, and support the development of clinical management strategies and public health responses.

Plastic waste bound for landfill can be transformed into a more eco-friendly alternative that breaks down quickly and easily, a study suggests.

Applying the new process to upcycle existing plastics – such as those used for food packaging – could contribute to tackling global plastic pollution issues, researchers say.

A new type of cell therapy shows promise as the first treatment for advanced liver disease, following results from a clinical trial.

Patients with the condition who were treated with the cell therapy had a significantly lower risk of death or need for a liver transplant after four years compared with those who received standard medical care.

Experts say the treatment offers a potential alternative to liver transplants for those in end-stage liver disease, which is currently the only curative treatment option but limited by donor availability, cost, and suitability for only a small subset of patients.

A bank of personal stories, wellbeing exercises and practical tools to help support people after bereavement has been developed by Edinburgh researchers.
The web-based resource – called My Grief My Way – provides self-help support solutions for people who are grieving.
The online hub has been developed using evidence of the common experiences that people encounter after losing someone important to them, and of what helps people to recover or heal after loss.
The end-of-life charity Marie Curie UK and Cruse Scotland guided aspects of the work.
