A very warm Heriot-Watt welcome to Professor Nola Hewitt-Dundas, our new Principal and Vice-Chancellor.

Nola joins us from Queen’s University Belfast, and in the weeks ahead she’ll be out meeting students and colleagues across Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Orkney, Dubai and Malaysia.

She’s shared a short message about joining Heriot-Watt and what she’s most looking forward to.

“I’d tell anyone starting uni to remind yourself that the nerves you have are shared.”

Hear from Thandi, a recent Psychology Graduate, as she reflects on her time at Heriot-Watt.

“When results day came, I didn’t get into my firm choice. I was heartbroken. I remember calling my best friend in tears, not knowing what to do next. She was already heading to Heriot-Watt and said, “Why don’t you come here?” I hadn’t even considered it. I called the Clearing hotline and honestly, it was so smooth.

Fast forward four years and I can’t imagine having gone anywhere else. Heriot-Watt has been everything I didn’t know I needed. The campus is small and friendly, which made it easy to settle in and make friends.

In my final year, I really enjoyed that I got a lot more involved on campus as a whole, becoming a content ambassador for the university, and spent a lot more time with my friends. Everyone was starting to talk about what they were going on to do next, hearing all of it, and reminiscing about how far we’d come together, was bittersweet and a good end to our university journeys together.

Making content for the University is what really got me into communications, right now I’m in New York, spending the summer at the United Nations doing Digital Design, which has been so exciting and I’ve learned so much in just a few months.

If you are just joining Heriot-Watt remember that the people around you have also just arrived and are hoping to make friends, so talk to people, join new clubs, and try loads of unfamiliar things.”

We were delighted to welcome Stephen Gethins SNP MSP, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Energy, to our Orkney campus yesterday to discuss how our research, education and industry partnerships are supporting Scotland's energy transition.

The visit highlighted the impact of our recently launched Island Scholarship programme, which is supported by The Scottish Government as part of its National Islands Plan, and the Orkney Islands Council. The programme is helping attract talented students to Orkney and build the skilled workforce needed for the islands' growing renewable energy sector.

Discussions also showcased the work of our International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) and the collaborations that have helped establish Orkney as a global hub for renewable energy and marine science innovation.

From advancing net-zero solutions to strengthening local communities and economies, Heriot-Watt remains committed to supporting sustainable development across Scotland's islands.
