Collaboration is essential if we're going to meet Scotland's net zero ambitions.

That's why we're proud to be part of Universities Scotland's campaign showcasing the impact universities have in addressing some of the country's biggest challenges.

As part of the Net Zero theme, we're highlighting GreenShed, an innovative project based at our research farm in Midlothian. Led by us and delivered in partnership with researchers and industry partners, GreenShed uses cattle waste bedding to generate energy, capture methane and power both a vertical farm and low-carbon fertiliser system.

The project has the potential to remove the equivalent of 237 tonnes of carbon dioxide per farm each year, while helping farmers improve profitability, diversify production and reduce the environmental impact of beef farming.

GreenShed is a great example of what can be achieved when universities, businesses and industry work together to develop practical solutions for a more resilient and sustainable future.

SRUC's Davy McCracken featured on BBC Farming Today as part of the programme's week-long focus on the state of upland farming across the UK.

Upland farming is particularly important in Scotland, where around 70% of agricultural land is classed as uplands. These farms are the backbone of many rural communities, with sheep farming playing a major role alongside beef production and forestry.

Listen back to hear Davy's insights and learn more about the future of upland farming.

EU alignment - farmers says it's hard to get ready for the change without more detail.

HNC Wildlife and Conservation Management student Anna Dorward was interviewed by the BBC while carrying out volunteer fieldwork on the River Tweed, surveying river flies as indicators of water quality and pollution.

The work forms part of a partnership between Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust and Tweed Foundation, giving students valuable opportunities to contribute to real-world conservation projects while developing practical monitoring and fieldwork skills.

Outdoor learning can have a huge impact on childrenโ€™s confidence, wellbeing and development.

Spending time outdoors encourages creativity, communication, resilience and problem solving, while helping children build a stronger connection with nature. It can also support mental wellbeing and create more engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

The Forest and Outdoor Learning Award at SRUC Barony is designed for teachers, nursery practitioners and anyone passionate about outdoor education. Students develop practical skills and the confidence to lead meaningful outdoor learning experiences.
