Edinburgh University's Staff Pride Network is an inclusive network that serves as a resource for the rich diversity of LGBT+ identified employees across the institution and includes PhD students who prefer to attend staff events. Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for all people who self identify as part of LGBT+ communities, whether or not they are 'out' in the wi
der world, and to make LGBT+ issues more visible within the University environment. Different organisations use different acronyms to refer to specific groups, and terminology is always evolving. We include within LGBT+ those who identify as le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, gender fluid, intersex, nonbinary, asexual, pansexual and polyamorous. We will include all those individuals and communities whose sexuality or gender identity is a matter of shared personal, political and/or social experience, as well as those who are LGBT+ allies. The 8th October marks International Le***an Day.
Celebrated in New Zealand since 1980 and Australia since 1990, it is now an International day designed to highlight the issues faced by le***ans and to recognise and celebrate their achievements and experiences.
International Le***an Day was first observed in New Zealand on 8th March 1980, with the very first Le***an Day March taking place at Wellington's Central Park on International Women's Day.
The first international Le***an Day event in Australia was held at the Collingwood Town Hall in Melbourne on 13th October, 1990. Since then, the le***an community in Melbourne has celebrated this day either on or around 8th October .

The 23rd September marks Bisexual Visibility day.
First officially observed in 1999 at the International Le***an and Gay Association Conference in Johannesburg, the day aimed to promote awareness of bisexuality at a time where couples were often labelled as gay or straight, with little awareness of bisexuality.
The month of September was chosen to commemorate Freddie Mercury, who was famously bisexual and born in September. The date of the 23rd selected as being the birth date of Gigi Wilbur, one of the three activists that championed this initial celebration of the day.
