Join us for a special book series launch with the series editors, featuring a detailed Q&A on the series, the publishing process, and developing research for publication. Whether you’re interested in legal theory, the Global South, or thinking about turning your research into a publication, this is a great opportunity to hear directly from the editors and ask your questions. Fully funded PhD studentship opportunity!

We're inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position with the "Decisions" Cluster of the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life (CAL), working with Professor Nehal Bhuta at Edinburgh Law School.

CAL is exploring one of the most urgent questions for contemporary society: how do we wish to live with and alongside algorithmic technologies? The Decisions cluster examines how algorithmic life is changing the character of decisions through the hybrid knowledges of humans and algorithms, from military and security to welfare and public administration.

This scholarship is available to students with Home fee status (UK, Republic of Ireland, or EU-EEA with Pre-settled status), and will pay tuition fees at UK Home Fee rates plus an annual stipend in line with UKRI rates.

The deadline for applications is 30 September 2026, with the successful applicant starting in January 2027 or September 2027.

In her lecture Professor Ruiz Abou-Nigm explores these three claims: that private international law’s transformative energy is born in the encounter between legalities; that its radiance extends well beyond questions of jurisdiction, applicable law, and cross-border recognition; and that significant potential remains to be unlocked.

Join us on 10–11 September for events marking the close of the Reversing the Gaze project, led by Dr Deval Desai and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation's Sinergia consortium programme.

The project develops legal and political theory from the Global South, from Indian constitutional theory on tax and spending to its application in the EU and Italy, while reflecting on the colonial legacies shaping how such theory is built and shared.

Across two days at Old College, three public launch events (including two Cambridge University Press titles and a new Elements series) connect the project's work to wider questions on legal theory and the Global South.

Dr Lachlan Urquhart, Senior Lecturer in Technology Law and Human-Computer Interaction, has been awarded funding by the Scottish Institute for Policing Research for a new project on live facial recognition (LFR).

Dr Urquhart and Dr Diana Miranda (University of Stirling), both directors of the Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance and Privacy (CRISP), will carry out Face[REC]: Co-Designing Live Facial Recognition Governance from August 2026 to April 2027.

The project will examine the ethical, legal and governance challenges of LFR use in Scottish policing, engaging citizens, police, policymakers and regulators through co-design methods, including a specially designed card-deck tool for collective deliberation.

Edinburgh Law School is proud to present the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Veronica Ruiz Abou-Nigm.

Professor Verónica Ruiz Abou-Nigm holds the Chair of Private International Law. A Uruguayan qualified lawyer, Professor Ruiz Abou-Nigm obtained an LL.M and Ph.D from the University of Edinburgh. She joined Edinburgh Law School in 2014, having previously been Lecturer in Law at Sheffield Law School (2008–2013). Prior to becoming an academic, she worked in private legal practice, specialising in shipping law, arbitration and mediation.
