It's here! And what a gorgeous cover too! WOBA is so pleased to have contributed to this fantastic publication on women's writing in the Afro-Luso-Atlantic with a chapter on Maria Firmina dos Reis's groundbreaking novel Úrsula: romance original brasileiro por uma maranhense. I'm endlessly grateful to the editors Margarida Rendeiro, Susan de Oliveira and Teresa Manjate for the invitation to share the work.

Keeping WOBA alive has been a super challenging journey. But we are still here. Having left the University of Exeter, our project is now embarking on a new path. Our very own Grantless-but-Determined- Mad-Women-in-the-Attics-of-the-Atlantic journey has officially started.

Stay strong, stay tuned.

WOBA's latest article, “Rainbow Fever: Running after the Archive in Carolina Maria de Jesus, Conceição Evaristo, and Ana Maria Gonçalves,” has been published! 📚🎉

The piece explores how three remarkable Afro-Brazilian women writers engage with the archive—both recovering and reimagining Black histories and memories - by drawing on the rainbow.

Their works challenge dominant narratives of the Black Atlantic, making space for voices that have never been silent.

This article marks a significant milestone for the Women of the Brown Atlantic Project, as we continue to highlight the powerful contributions of women from the Afro-Luso-Brazilian world.

WOBA was honoured to have participated in the ConferĂȘncia Internacional Literatura de Mulheres: MemĂłrias, Periferias e ResistĂȘncias no AtlĂąntico Afro-Luso-Brasileiro in Lisbon this September.

So many powerful voices came together to share stories that amplify the narratives of women across the Atlantic.

Grateful for the opportunuty to contribute and learn from such an inspiring community of scholars, artists, writers and change-makers.

"When I encountered the writing of Evaristo, I experienced a very strong desire for new theory. This desire was, from the start, the engine behind the Women of the Brown Atlantic project. A desire for a new vocabulary, a new set of tools that would allow for a meeting with Evaristo in her own terms, rather than attempting to read her texts under the magnifying glass of existing theory. The new theory that’s required is one that is able to keep the theoriser in a place of discomfort. Theory that extends discomfort, that names it without trying to resolve it. A sort of treadmill theory that keeps one running after what can’t be reached. I call it Rainbow Fever."
