This week, 3rd year School of Adventure Studies UHI students, Sam and Eli, are heading off on an international expedition to Japan as part of their studies ✈️🌍

Their expedition will take them to one of Japan’s most biologically diverse and culturally rich islands, where they’ll explore the relationship between people, place, and time through immersive, place-based learning. The experience connects directly with their studies in adventure tourism, environmental understanding, and cultural perspectives of landscape.

Throughout their time abroad, they’ll be taking part in field-based learning, cultural experiences, and reflective practice - developing skills and insights that go beyond the classroom and into real-world adventure contexts.

We are looking forward to following their journey and sharing insights from their experience, offering a glimpse into what international expeditions and adventure learning can look like as part of the programme.

Good luck Sam and Eli πŸ‘

The final "Expeditionary Skills in a Changing World" module team are back from their practice expedition. Team Italy are planning SOAS's first ever SUP expedition, with a descent of the Piave river in May. They used a three day trip on the river Spey as an opportunity to test their ideas around how much kit is "enough", how to carry it on the boards, and how that affects your paddling ability.

7Am this morning, Melvich BayπŸ₯Ά
This week the third year expedition teams are completing some training days in preparation for their summer expeditions.
The foucs is to field test kit, consolidate personal skills, and develop risk assessments, as well as spending time together as a team discussing the final details.
Team Madeira will be trekking accross the island before exploring the surf potential. They are currently up on the north coast with lecturer Lee looking at what makes an appropriate surf spot, and surf safety.
Good effort guys, Madeira in August will be warmer than -3 degrees!
