Lucy, a former Masters student at the University of Glasgow’s School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, shares her journey into the world of geoscience. Originally studying physics, Lucy discovered a passion for earth sciences after taking an elective course — a subject she found practical, essential, and incredibly relevant.

She explains how she bridged the gap between physics, coding, and geoscience, and how her Masters programme equipped her with vital skills for research and her PhD she is now studying.

Want to widen your career options with Masters in Climate Science or Computational Geoscience? Find out more and apply at https://gla.ac/PG-Geoscience-Lucy-FB

Pakta Ledak | Explosive Pact
Thursday, February 26, 2026. University of Glasgow Advanced Research Centre, Studio 2, 13:00-14:30

What does it mean to move a mountain? How does a state extract geopower? Can documentary film intervene in stressed environments?

Sand mines on active volcanoes are feeding Indonesia’s unprecedented economic growth and infrastructure expansion. Bridges, roads, airports, renewable energy technologies, and massive sea walls are being built with the remains of volcanic eruptions. A vast fleet of miners and trucks are intervening in the deep time drift of plate tectonics. Farms are churned up, villages terrorised by violence, and politicians are paid to keep quiet.

Pakta Ledak is a collaboration between artisanal miners, a youth orchestra, wild boar, activists, anthropologists, geographers, and artists. Filmed in the sand mines of Mount Merapi volcano, the documentary dismantles the violent cosmology of extraction.

Measuring levels of radiocarbon not only tells us how old organic materials are, but it also tells us about the impacts of climate change. Philippa Ascough and the team at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) are advancing this technique for environmental science, expanding the possibilities for what radiocarbon dating can be used for.
