ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
It’s handover time!!!! As another amazing year comes to an end, we’ll be needing a new committee to run the show. So come along to the AGM to run for a position/vote for your future committee!
WHEN: Wednesday 26th March @ 8pm
WHERE: Innis and Gunn private room
We’ll start off with a vote on constitutional changes, please read below for details:
We propose to change the role of the Honorary Office Bearer(s). This has previously been a two year role, in which alumni member(s) can offer advice/guidance to the rest of the committee. We propose to shorten the term to a one year role, and have voting on this role at December instead of March. This will allow them to be in their role during handover period and ensure a smooth transition to the new committee. This year, we will vote on our new Honorary Office Bearer(s) but they will hold the role until December 2026, when the one year term of the next holder will commence.
Have a read, and any questions you have can be answered at the AGM.
Okay, now for the roles us for grabs!
PRESIDENT (Supreme Leader, El Presidente, Bossman)
The person in charge of making sure everyone in committee is doing their jobs correctly - and if they're not then making sure said work gets done yourself. Also in charge of the club's strategy and policy for the year. You also get to decide where the meets are which is cool. Figurehead role, for many, particularly new members, you will be their introduction to the club and it's culture. You must be confident standing and speaking in front of crowds. As part of the Exec you will be in somewhat regular communication with GUSA, through emails, club development meetings and club seminars. There is a reasonable obligation for you to attend as many meets and socials as possible.
Commitment Rating: 10/10 (though potentially even higher depending on the commitment of the rest of your committee)
SECRETARY (Bossman of Paperwork and Emails)
President’s right hand a general organiser of stuff and things. Main jobs involve taking minutes at committee meetings, booking halls, dealing with GUSA stuff, running AGMs and any other odd jobs that need done. Probably best suited to someone who LOVES emails, spreadsheets and generally being organised. Definitely a behind the scenes role but would be extremely helpful for someone looking to make a presidential run in future as you get all-round experience of how the club runs.
Commitment Rating: 10/10
VICE PRESIDENTS (Fun Enforcers)
VP… aka social sec!!!
Vice president involves organising all of GUMC’s social events throughout the year, including ceilidhs, pub crawls, dinner meet and the cheese and wine night. The role is also part of the exec committee so attends a few club development meetings and GUSA seminars. VP allows you to organise any extra activities you think club members would enjoy, such as non-drinking socials etc. The role is high commitment throughout the year but is very rewarding - and of course… you need to be psyched for socials!
Commitment Rating: 8/10
TREASURER (The Taxman)
A very committing role where one has a big amount of control of the GUMC bank account to carry out payments on the club's behalf. Being an exec role, you contribute to important decisions for GUMC alongside the other 3 most senior roles in the club.
Tasks over the semesters include doing every sign-up, keeping up with payments for meet halls, venues, fuel, gear etc., and also chasing people who owe the club money with your handy sumup card reader. There's a lot to keep track of but being on it from the start makes it a lot easier. If you're not on it with the money then the club goes to a standstill
Commitment Rating: 10/10
MEET SECRETARY (Spreadsheet Maker in Chief)
Meet sec is a pretty chill role consisting of doing the sign-ups in the pub every second Wednesday, creating and putting up the meet posts, sorting the bus list, and answering any meet related questions that people have. It is a nice way to get to speak to lots of people in the pub and get familiar with peoples faces that will be going on the meets! This role requires commitment to the pub and sometimes momentary stress during sign-ups!
Commitment Rating: 6/10
SAFETY SECRETARY (Club Cartographer)
The Safety Secretary ensures safety is a priority in all club activities. This includes making sure there are plenty of maps and route cards at meets, ensuring they are specific to the area, and chasing people up to fill them out. They keep track of route cards, making sure people are accounted for when they return to the village hall. The role also involves organizing safety courses throughout the year, including a winter safety talk. Overall, they promote a strong safety culture within the club.
If you don’t know how to use the Uni printers, you’d better get used to it!
Commitment Rating: 5/10
GEAR SECRETARY (Club Quartermaster)
The role is to look after the club's gear stores. This includes maintanence, lending it out, keeping track of who borrows what, taking it on meets and buying new gear. It's not a difficult role, but it can be fairly time consuming
Commitment Rating: 6/10
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY (Club Ambassador to Mountaineering Scotland)
Main responsibilities are communicating with mountaineering Scotland at the start of the year about how many people are in the club and making sure that club members are members of mountaineering Scotland. This year due to interesting decisions made by the SRC and GUSA the responsibility of keeping track of members also falls on whoever holds this position. A very chill role.
Commitment Rating: 2/10
ALPS, BUS AND ENVIRONMENT SECRETARY (Head of Odd Jobs)
Responsible for organising transportation for our fortnightly trips, including booking buses and recruiting new drivers! Key tasks include filling out bus forms and sending lots of emails to Barbara. This role is also in charge of planning our biggest event of the year, the Alps trip, which involves managing the page, organising the vote, and most importantly applying for funding! Additionally, the role includes promoting environmental awareness within the club.
Commitment Rating: 5/10
COMPETITION SECRETARY (BUCSaneer)
Competition secretary is responsible for organizing competitive climbing opportunities. The two largest responsibilities is organizing BUCS and the Glasgow taxi cup. The competition sec should aid in fostering a positive climbing community and facilitate some opportunities for fun competitions as well as the serious ones. The jobs what’s you make of it.
Commitment Rating: 4/10
CLIMBING SECRETARY (Boulderer in Chief)
As climbing sec you are the person who organises events relating to climbing and promotes climbing within the club. You organise the freshers taster session at gcc along with the skills sessions at TCA every Monday. It’s important that you attend TCA every week to be a consistent face for new members of the club getting into climbing.
Commitment Rating: 5/10
WELFARE, IT AND JOURNAL (Head of HR, Chief Propagandist)
Welfare: I'm a point of call/a friendly face for people to talk to in any situation, whether officially or unofficially.
There is a welfare calender coordinated by the GUSA welfare that will tell you what to celebrate post about during the year.
IT: Probably the least time consuming of the roles, just have to update the website with committee members at the start of the year. David Southgate has an excellent step by step video on how to do this and is helpful when you message him with any questions.
Journal: Collecting people's stories from the year. Haven't done it yet, but I feel that putting a form out at the beginning and reminding people throughout will save me time. You don't have to make a zine that is just something I decided to do with the role for fun.
Commitment Rating: 8/10
HUT CUSTODIAN (Keeper of the Keys to Castle Clashgour)
Keeping the Clashgour Hut well maintained. Requires a car and being outside of Glasgow semi regularly.
Commitment Rating: 7/10
HONORARY OFFICE BEARER/ALUMNI OFFICER (Designated Oldyin)
Using your experience within the club to provide guidance to newer committee members. Ensuring the passing on of skills (mountain skills and committee skills). Providing a liaison to club alumni and lifetime members - Position must be held by a club alumni member.
Commitment Rating: 2/10
Really looking forward to seeing everybody there on the 26th of March and hearing everyone’s pitches for their respective roles - if you’re not sure right now then let me encourage you to give it a go!! Being on the committee is really fun and super rewarding and I can’t recommend it enough, and it’s great to see new members getting involved!
